Surgery tomorrow

Recommended Posts

And I am nervous, super excited, but nervous. Can't seem to focus on things- like what do I pack? What if something happens? Will this actually work? And I am hungry (liquids only today)

Just breath, you will be fine. Only thing you need is a robe, socks, gas-x. I was starving when I went in, but I"m never hungry now and it's liberating. Good luck and just keep your eye on the prize!

I brought comfy clothes like sweat pants & t-shirts and honestly I was so happy to change into them on day 2. I brought gas-x and a heating pad for the gas pain- the heating pad worked better. Toiletries such as toothbrush, deodorant, chapstick (the hospital also provided these). I also brought my iphone and ear buds. I had my ipad too but the phone was easier to hold. The ear buds were great because I was in a double room. When I wasn't sleeping I was bored so spent a lot of time online - bring something to keep you busy. I brought my own towel because the tiny little hand towels that they give you to shower don't even start to work :). Lastly make sure you have your insurance card on you so that you can easily pick up any RX that you leave with!

I always overpack but I think it is so much more relaxing to know that you have what you need!

Don't forget chapstick! My Dr. gave me a list and I brought everything but the chapstick. I had to call to have someone bring me some!

Wow! Thanks for all the tips! My surgery is Jan 16th. I have 11 lbs to lose. Started all liquid today - think this next two weeks is going to be hell! I'm so excited to be healthy again and comfortable not just in my own skin but doing things I have struggled with for so many years. Can't wait to coach softball and run with the kids this June! Im hopeful the weight I lose will help my horrible knees and back pain. Goal weight 135 here I come!! I hope the hungry feeling gets better this week- I want a cracker!! The end result will be worth it I'm certain, I think I want to eat right now because I'm sort of scared.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
