So I know we're supposed to be drinking whey Protein isolate shakes, but does anyone know why this particular protein? I was talking to a friend and she said that Whey Protein is very hard for the body to break down. She was suggesting a some Protein shake that tastes delicious and she sent me a photo of the ingredients.

The first ingredient was Milk Protein Concentrate. A few ingredients after, Whey Protein isolate came up, but I guess I wanted to know if any of you have tried this kind of protein instead of whey?

Why do we have to use whey and not some other forms of protein?

I might ask my dietician when I see her on Friday, because if my friend brings over samples and it tastes good, maybe I can use that instead!

We don't "have" to use Whey, we do so because it is the best, most bio-available protein that we can get.

I always hate to contradict people, but, your friend is completely wrong. Whey is actually the easiest protein for your body to absorb. To understand this better, it helps to know exactly what Whey is.

Do you remember "little Miss Muffet" eating her curds & whey? Well curds & whey is the classic term for cottage cheese. The whey is the liquid portion of cottage cheese. Also when making cheese milk separates and the liquid left behind is whey.

Whey is very watery and goes through a filtration process to remove Water from it. Then it is further filtered to remove fats. At this point you have Whey Protein Concentrate. You can further filter it to remove even more fat & remove lactose from it to isolate just the protein portion of the whey, this is called...... You guessed it, Whey Protein Isolate. The purest protein you can get from milk

Now to address why it seems so "hard" on your stomach. Whey Protein Isolate is (pretty much)pure protein. Protein is one of the hardest things for your body to break down. That is why your digestive system actually slows down the contractions of your intestine when protein is introduced. It is so that you body can absorb more of the protein as it passes.

Milk Proteins are in essence whey Proteins but still have all the fats, waters, & lactose in them.

It's kind of like comparing Budweiser to Everclear. If you are looking to get drunk you can drink several bottles of Budweiser with all it's malt, barley, Water, etc in it. Or you can drink a few oz of Everclear (almost pure alcohol). Yes the Everclear is hard to get down, but if your only purpose is to get drunk, the purer the alcohol the faster it will happen & the less it takes

Our goal with protein is to get as much quality protein as we can in as small of a portion as possible. So, Whey Protein Isolate is the Everclear of protein. It is simply the best, most efficient way to get the job done.

I'd like to add, milk protein concentrate is not bad, many of the supplements I use do contain it.

Thank you so much for all the info! I'll definitely discuss with my nut and see if it's advisable for me to use milk Protein if I don't like whey

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
