Greetings from Kuala Lumpur (left arm pain, nausea)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I went through gastric sleeve surgery in Malaysia on 6 December 2012 and has lost about 18kg todate.

I have a few problems/questions at the moment hopefully you guys could help me. English is not my first language and hope you guys can understand what I am trying to write.

Question 1

I have been experiencing pain in my left arm since past 1 week. I read in this forum that this may be due to the gas pain especially the pain on the left shoulder. While may pain mainly concentrate on the left side of the palm near the thumb and also some parts of the arm. Is this also due to the gas pain.

Initially thought that this might be due to the artery catheter as I was admitted to the ICU for 2 days after the surgery but after reading the forum this could cause by the gas pain. Hope someone could elaborate more on this.

Question 2

Also I have been experiencing nausea and vomiting for the past 5-6 days. I vomit nothing just air and saliva. I suspect that this may be due to myself experimenting with solid food ie. fried noodles, rice, beef and squid when I should only eat puree food at this stage. The feeling is certainly annoying as I just feel like vomiting whole day. I had gone back to puree food since yesterday with only low fat fruit yogurt, milk and soy drink. I would like to know is there anyone who had experience this and how do you overcome it. Can we take any anti-nausea medication.

Question 3

I read that most people recommend to take sugar free stuff like sugar free drinks or ice cream. Unfortunately we dont really have sugar free products in Malaysia. There is no sugar free popcycle or crystallight or anything like that. The only think I can find is something like no sugar added fruit juice or low fat food/milk/yogurt which still contain sugar. Will this slow down my weight loss?

Another thing my mom has been persisting me to eat the KFC's mash potatoes but I read somewhere that we should stay away from starchy food.

It is really hard to find suitable food in this part of the world and hopefully someone whose previous staple food was rice or from this part of the world could suggest me on suitable diet that are available here.

Hope someone could help me with all above. Thank you.

Blenderize tuna, beef, chicken and add spices you would like. Put into ice cube trays and freeze. Pop out and put in bags for use later. Then you can grab out of freezer and put in microwave and eat slowly 2 oz. Do this for awhile with your Protein shakes and you will not get sick. eggs should be on your food list at this point. A litttle low fat cheese. Low fat cottage cheese. Stick to these easy to digest things and you should not get sick. Jello, peaches blenderized like the meat above. Just try to find low sugar things. Can't you buy sugar free things off the internet. sugar free Jello, crystal lite.

You must stay away from sugar and starches at this point in order to lose your optimun weight.

Good luck to you on your journey.

Also I forgot drink 64 oz of liquids a day which since you do not have sugar free you need to do mostly Water and then Decaf coffee or tea or broth.

thanks for the advice....my nausea and left arm pain now pretty much gone....I had stick back to the actual diet...I did some shopping in tesco and managed to find quite a number of free sugar cordial which is great...I mostly drink low-fat soymilk and have low fat yogurt for meal.....

Truth is prior to the surgery; I hardly cook nor prepare any meal for myself. I normally just east outside at fast food restaurant or any other eateries, But since the operation, on top of change of eating habit, I gotta learn how to cook aswell which is quite hard I guess.

I met my GP and he explains that my left arm pain was due to the artery catheter and he prescribed me with some muscle relaxant pills and the pain almost gone now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
