Day 5 Post-Op - Tears and Possible Low Blood Sugar?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on Friday afternoon, 12/21. I've had no real problems other than the lovely gas pains the first 24 hours or so, and my eyes are still dilated (presumably from anesthesia.) However, yesterday and today (Days 4 and 5) I've experienced what feels like low blood sugar.

Yesterday I started feeling very shaky and weak, similar to what I've felt in the past with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar.) I drank another Protein Shake and felt better. This morning I have not felt well from the time I woke up. Same thing - shakiness, weakness in my legs. I was pretty sure I'd end up passing out at some point. I've been taking in the appropriate amount of Protein - struggling with my Vitamins but ultimately getting them down - but still this whole day has been touch and go. At one point I even licked (tiny, tiny licks that I then let melt on my tongue) on a spoonful of PB in hopes that would help me perk up.

All of the badness of the day has lead to a lot of tears and regret about this surgery. What have I done? Will I pass out tomorrow? Can I make it to Friday the 28th when I can add some 'cream of...' Soups to my diet?

I'm scared.

If you are struggling with the same things now or have in the past, I'd welcome any insight on how to get through. My husband is a fantastic support system for me, but fresh perspective is welcome.

What about sucking on a hard piece of candy or getting a non sugared pop scicle to get sugar up quick

I have been feeling the same way! I was sleeved 12/20. I've not only had those feeling physically but I have been a emotional basket case! I just fall apart for no reason :/

Good luck!!

Im sorry you are having such a tough time. Try reaching out to your surgeons office or PCP about the low blood sugar peice. I think there are drops you can get specifically for low blood sugar that will help you to get it up where you need it to be. Hope that helps. Feel better and know in just a few days you will be on full liquids and will be in a better place.

Call your surgeon. You don't know it's low blood sugar for sure and, even if it is, you don't know how he/she would want you to treat it.

Maybe it's just PTSD. I get that way with my panic attacks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
