Anyone made turkey breast in a crockpot?

I found some recipes to make turkey breast in a crockpot, but I want to slow roast it. Most of the recipes say 3-4 hours on high. Do you think it's safe to cook it on high a couple of hours and then on low for 6 hours or so? I do that with other meats, but turkey always intimidates me.

Also, I'm thinking about not thawing it first since there's no gizzards or anything. What do you think?

I have never done turkey that way, but I do it with chicken all the time. Throw the chicken and a bottle of barbecue sauce and it is yummy when I get home. Let me know how the turkey works out, I may have to try that next. I love crockpot cooking, it is great to come home from work and have the house smell so good and dinner all ready.

Can't say I've ever done chicken or turkey in my crockpot. Hmmm bet it's yummy. If you've done chicken I would have to assume you can do turkey the same way and it would be fine :)

I tried the turkey today. It never reached 170 on the meat thermometer, even though I cooked it on high for 8.5 hours. It might have been fine, but I didn't want to risk it. Also, my crockpot might not get as hot as some.

Anyway, I finally just pulled the meat off of the bone, put it in a baking dish and stuck it in the oven on 350. Wasn't done in time for dinner, but it will be ready tomorrow.

Fortunately, I had made some chicken and mushroom stuffing that was to die for. So that became my dinner. I posted the recipe in the recipe forum. It takes a little time, but wow...it's amazing.

Oh my goodness, thank you ladies. I am going to crock pot my turkey for thanksgiving. I think I will do the can of mushroom Soup with it. Oh wow that sounds good. It will be moist, tender, delicious and should be able to slide through the band. Thank you again.

Did you thaw the turkey before you cooked it? I've found a recipe from Southern Living for crockpot turkey and stuffing that I was going to fix for Thanksgiving. The recipe calls for a 3 lb turkey breast, thawed. I'm extra paranoid about meat being done and wasn't going to try it if there's a chance it doesn't get to 170 degrees. I'll post the recipe in case anyone is interested...it sounds yummy and easy.

Oh my goodness ladies, ya gotta go to Rachael Ray's site and check out her 60 minute Thanksgiving recipes. She's got a turkey breast recipe that is out of this world.

That's a wonderful idea about the crock pot cooking, I think I'll check it out on the food network and see if it's safe.

No, I didn't thaw the turkey, but I cooked it for 8 hours. It was thawed after a couple, so I don't think it would have reached 170 no matter how long I cooked it in the crockpot.

Good luck to everyone who is planning to use the crockpot, but be sure to use your meat thermometer. You might need to finish it off in the oven.

And thanks for the tip about the Rachel Ray website!

I cook turkey breast in the crockpot all the time. I put it in frozen in the morning on high with a can of chicken broth. I work a 10 hour shift and when I come home the turkey is done. It is falling off the bone and is delicious. I have been doing this for years.

I have never tried crock pot turkey. I have always cooked my turkeys whole in the over bags you can buy. When you use a foil pan and the oven bag, it makes clean-up a breeze and the turkey is always perfectly done. Just stick it in the oven and forget about it for a few hours.

I wonder if maybe I just need a new crockpot? :)

Do some of them get hotter than others?

After 8 hours on high, mine wasn't even CLOSE to falling off the bone.

Ok so did I read wrong, or did someone up above me say they cook dry meats in the crockpot, as in no liquid added?

I never thought of doing that. It works? What's the difference between that and oven baking?

I never cooked turkey in my life, other than to make a melt out of some deli slices, and I think once I grilled some legs. :paranoid

You read that right. Put a whole chicken in your crockpot and cook on low all night. It will make its own juice and be so tender and moist, you won't believe it.

I just did the exact thing last night. I had a turkey breast and cooked it on low in the crockpot, mixed in lipton onion Soup mix with about 1/2 cup Water and let it cook all day yesterday (7am - 6:30 pm) When we got home it smelled heavenly, very tender and tasty. Also, lots more juices.

I saved the broth and the leftover turkey - I'm making turkey noodle soup tomorrow night (I'm taking my bowl out before I add the noodles).

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
