My story begins

Recommended Posts

I am new to this forum so will tell you a bit about me.

I have been overweight most of my adult life. I guess my first diet was about the time I graduated from college. But before that I would hide and sneak food setting up roller coaster that would plague me for from late teens into adulthood. I learned early on to reward myself with food, for good behavior, bad choices, hurts, boredom, most anything was rewardable with food. The big white box in the kitchen became my lover. I think I’ve tried almost every diet out there, some with good success for a time and some not so good. As time goes I will share more of myself here,

Fast forward 60+ years. My quality of life is not what I want in my later years, so I finally told my PCP that I was ready for weight loss surgery, mind you he had been suggesting it for years prior. Needless to say he was elated. I submitted my paperwork at a seminar in April 2012. My insurance company had a 6-month waiting period and lots of requirements to be met. I met all the requirements and then some by early November and submitted it to the insurance company for approval. I got an immediate denial. My company is self-insured but administered by Cigna. After many calls to Cigna and hours on the phone they finally fixed their error and I got the approval.

I was sleeved on 17 December 2012. Today, I am one week post op and feeling better now that the gas seems to have gone away. I still have trouble getting all the liquid and Protein and Vitamins in a day but I do my best. I was not happy when I got home and found out that I had gained 8 pounds. That's when I went searching and found this forum.

Congrats. I was sleeved on the 19th. You only have a gain due to all the liquids they pushed during your surgery and don't forget all the swelling. I weighed yesterday and was down 10 lbs. A word of advise, don't get on the scale everyday, you will drive yourself crazy. I wasn't planning on weighing until Wed. but couldn't resist. I will weigh again on Wed., then once a week afterwards. It's also a good idea to take measurements, because when you're in a stall your body will lose inches to adjust. Good luck!!

Good luck! I was also sleeved the 17th. I had gained about 6lbs due to all the fluids they pushed but I've lost it plus more. I have to hide the scale because I want to weigh myself everyday. Lol. Hope your doing well. I'm just starting to ween myself off of the pain medicine so I can be normal. I have another 3 weeks off from work so I need to get my butt on the treadmill. Been procrastinating on that. Have a Merry Christmas!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
