Tamale Yay or Nay?

Recommended Posts

I would say avoid eating the masa part and stick with just a few nibbles of the inside. Good luck and happy holidays!

Here's my update...I hadn't had anything to eat all day other than a Protein Shake, hoping not having a full stomach would help me tolerate a bit of tamale. When I got to my mom's, I ate 3-4 small bites of a pork tamale (not just the inside). It went down fine, no problem. I just felt like I would get full if I took another bite, so I stopped. I did get mild heartburn for about 30 minutes.

The next time it was mealtime, I thought I would try it again, since it went fine the first time. This time the tamale was from a neighbor, more spicy than mom's. I ate only the meat this time, a small tamale. When I ate it, I enjoyed it because it was so flavorful in comparrison to my daily shakes and bland Proteins. However; immediately after I ate it, I felt that "lead stomach" feeling. I know I probably ate too much of it, like 3 oz. instead of my 2 oz. portions. Either way, it lasted for over an hour and was so uncomfortable that the next day I gave the rest of them to my brother-in-law! I advise against tamales early on. I'm 4 weeks out.

I am three weeks out and ate a mild chicken tamale. Of course I started eating it xmas eve and finished it xmas day. No problems with

it in my tummy though.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
