Hi everyone--I've been cruising around this site for a couple of weeks..Lots of great info and nice people.....I'm 51, a nurse, and a guy--doesn't seem like there are to many males here. I have my first appt. with surgeon in 2 weeks--will get the process started and check out my insurance--lap band has just been approved by BCBS in my state though I guess indidvidual policies vary--so we'll see. I'm kind of nervous about all this--it's hard for me to imagine my life with such a change in eating habits--I don't have much of a choice though if I want to go on living. The last couple of years the weight has really begun to affect how I feel and what I can do. I've got lots of questions so you'll probably see me around the forums....later

GOOD LUCK i think you will do fine . the transition for me took about a month. for me the discomfort i felt the first time i ate too much was enough to keep me from ever doing it again. im very careful to eat slow . i try a bite or two of something. then wait. then if it goes down ok, ill eat a few more bites. it is amazing how little food we need in comparison to what we eat. the lapband puts it in perspective. this was the best thing i ever did. i tried everything. i still ate too much. now i have to make myself eat enough. you will feel so much better after a few months. i feel great. i feel light and healthy. dont rush the weight loss. it will happen. just heal up and follow the RULES. hope all goes well for you.

Welcome and good luck! I'm set to get banded next week, so I don't have any BTDT advice for you, but just wanted to welcome you.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
