I didn't realize you can get a leak after two weeks of surgery. I read some horror stories in here now I can't eat and I don't want to drink I'm non-stop checking my temp. I don't know what to do :( I'm only two weeks post- op when can I start feeling secure?

I too had read some of the "horror" stories.. I was scared to death to have the surgery.. but now that ive had it and went thru the routing barium swallow eval and no probs.. I listen to my Doctor.. and do exactly what he says to do.. and I dont read all that stuff anymore.. everyone is different.. I quit worrying about all that and concentrated on what I needed to do to get all my Protein and fluids down.. I figure why worry about something that may or may not happen.. they can fix it if it does.. its all good.. please dont worry so much about that.. you need to be eating and doing the right things. Thats whats going to trip you up... stay on track. thats the Key to success. just dont read that stuff.. I focused on reading all the positive things in here..and I get excited about doing well. it will be ok.. I was scared too.. but its all good now.. Im good and soon I will be on my weigh to posting how much Ive lost and how well ive done.. all the best to you.. keep in touch.. Im only 3 days out myself.. but Im doing well.

Yes, you can get a leak 2 weeks after if your not following your doc's directions. My doc had us do an all liquid diet the first 3 weeks so we wouldn't damage our staple line. The 2nd phase was pureed for 3 3 weeks, 3rd phase was soft food for 3 weeks and then what ever we could tolerate. Just keep your diet very simple for the first 3 weeks with liquids and gradually add some yogurt sf, sf pudding, cottage cheese, ect. Like the previous poster stated, if it does happen, then it can be fixed.....But prevention is the eye word here. :)

Thank you guys, I am being very strict with my diet. My doctor said go ahead with puréed foods Monday just make sure NOTHING has chunks, but I think I'm gonna just hold off and stay on liquids. I would NEVER even dare cheat with this way to serious.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
