Mexico Post Op Complications Treatment in the States

Recommended Posts

I'm having the sleeve done on 1/21/13. I'm self pay going to Baja, Mexico. If I were to have any complications once I'm back home in Vegas would the local hospital or my Primary treat me or would I have to travel back to Mexico?

Your PCP and/or ER would treat you. However, if the initial surgery isn't covered by your insurance then any complications that arise from the surgery also would not be covered. If has the potential to be financially devastating. Just something to be aware of before you decide to have your surgery self-pay.

You will be able to get treatment here. It might depend on your insurance wether they cover that treatment. I will say though that my sister had a self pay surgery and had wound complications from it, her wound treatment was covered by her insurance because it was not considered post-op treatment but a new issue.

Thanks guys I definitely was so wondering. I know some insurances have a waiting period for procedures done outside their coverage. I was panicking if an emergency happened what would I do? There's a chance they'll see it as secondary to surgery but they will prob fight to make it about the surgery to save money. It definitely is a gamble. I see more success stories than complications so I'm going to pray that I'll be ok.

I went to Mexico on Dec 4 and I got dehydrated and had to go to the ER Thursday. I was really scared that the doctors would have something to say about me going to Mexico to have this done. They actually didn't say anything. They just double checked everything to make sure I was okay. However, he did refer me to another bariatric surgeon here in the states for follow up care. I was okay with that.

Oh well that was good. I am scared about any complications but I know that these hospitals are "supposed" to treat emergency situations regardless.

Don't worry. I was very impressed about the care I received in Mexico. You will be fine.

Great! I've lost 22 pounds so far and I'm almost 3 weeks out. I have to make myself eat and drink. I got dehydrated last week because I'm not drinking enough.

Wow that's great! I hope to have that type of results so quickly. Dehydration seems to be a common problem. I am searching all these blogs for all the different shakes and things that people are trying. I think I'm going to get a lil of everything just in case.

Yes I agree. The best one I've tried so far is te premier shakes from SAMs club. I bought samples from powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury (?) and I'm waiting on those to come in. Isopure is a great option because it has zero carbs. I just read about and I'm ordering that this morning.....2 tablespoons =28 grams of Protein. They say it's nasty but I can't seem to get all my liquids and Protein in so that's an option.

Are you going alone to Mexico? I did. At first I was nervous but I really got a lot of much needed rest. At the end of the trip I got homesick and ready to go home though.

No I'm going with my mother and brother. Why so many lol? My mom for my support but then she decided to have some dental work done while we're there so my brother will escort her to there.

I'm a lil confused. My pre-op paperwork said to take any weight loss shake. I'm drinking the Equate chocolate from Walmart. But this would not be the same as the Protein Shakes that have to be consumed after surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
