My doctor has been trying to encourage me to use the Bariatric Protein Shake mix but I have found some from the Vitamin shop that seem to be very close to what he wants me to use. The cost is a lot better as well. Anyone have thoughts on different Protein mixes?

use what you can afford, six star elite is good, Walmart has it for less than $20, whey tech is good frim Vitamin Shoppe, but it costs more

Six star elite is very good!! 30gm Protein per scoop. I've tried a few and its by far the best one I've had. Gold standard 100% whey at GNC is pretty good also. Not as much protein as the six star elite.

The best protein for you is a pure whey protein isolate. Whey concentrates aren't bad either.

If you are shopping at The Vitamin Shoppe, I'd highly recomend Nectar® by Syntrax. They even carry individual packets there so you can experiment with flavors before buying a big container of it. I personally like the fuzzy navel, cherry, and truffle flavors.

I heard that a lot of Protein powders are very fattening. Do you know if this is true?

This is kinda tricky. Protein is about 100calories per 20g. Many "protein powders" aren't just protein, many are meal substitutes or weight gainers designed gor high endurance athletes. Also, a very common mistake is that people tend to consume too much at one time. Too often I read people drinking a sake hat has 50g of protein. That is about double the amount that your body can use at one time. So really they are consuming double the necessary calories for the benefit.

It's all about reading labels.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
