My husband was sleeved yesterday, and he's in a lot of pain in his stomach. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how long the severe pain will last? His op took longer than usual because he was a "special case" due to his tall height. Dr said they had to keep repositioning the instruments, I wonder if this is causing him to be in more pain than the average. We are home now and his drain is out.

Also, anyone have any suggestions on how to help him get some gas out? I think that's causing him a lot of discomfort as well.

Any feedback would be awesome. I hate seeing him in so much pain, although I know it'll all be worth it eventually when it improves and lengthens our lives together.

I was sleeved on wed and the first night was the worst!! All of my gas pains were in my stomach, none in chest or shoulders. Honestly all I could do was walk. Each day gets better. Try a heating pad maybe? Good luck, hope he feels better soon!!

The only suggestion I was given was to walk. I was walking about 6-7 hours after surgery, and walked about every 2 hours for about 10-15 minutes. I think it helped me a lot in moving the gas around. Also elevating and de-elevating my hospital bed helped provide relief. Sometimes I would lay completely flat and the pain would go away. Other times I had to sit almost straight up to get relief. Just a suggestion!

I try to walk around my neighborhood every day despite feeling exhausted. Unfortunately, pain medicine won't do anything for gas pain, but just incision pains. So tell your hubby to walk when he's ready!

I agree...walking matters a lot. It doesn't have to be fast...just consistent.

Yeah he's been walking. He was doing very well walking around the hospital floor. He'd do about 5 laps around the whole ward at a time, and he does excellent with his incentive breathing thing. The dr said he could prolly bring two of them all the way to the top.

And we got the gas strips. How many of those can he take at once?

GasX is a gas med. they make them in a little minty strip you lay it on your tongue and they melt quick. You don't have to swallow a pill. I got 4 boxes at Walmart. It's the same medication you give babies for gas it's very safe. .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
