So, exactly why do we have such a hypersensitive nose post-sleeve? I feel like I have dog smell or something and its mostly NOT a good thing!

Does this side-effect mellow out further out from surgery? I'm almost 10 weeks out and it's still going strong!

I was thinking of posting the same thing. Unfortunately it seems the thing I notice the most now is bad breath. Ugh.

I have this problem and definitely would love an answer. My house smells like a giant oasis of halitosis.

Hi,

My sense of smell and taste was greatly enhanced after surgery. It stayed like that for about 7 months. The smell thing is better now.Food smells really nice to me now and I dont smell the bad smells as intensely anymore but the taste issue have ruined anything with sugar in it for me for good I think, thank goodness.Sweet stuff tastes revolting to me.

It does get a bit better though.

Good to know that it's not a permanent change! Sometimes it's almost overpowering. And god forbid someONE smell smoky or sweaty or stinky in some way...that makes me want to hurl. BLECH.

I feel like a damn bloodhound! ;)

LOVE that I am not alone..... 4 1/2 months post surgery and my family still calls my sense of smell a SUPER POWER that was implanted at surgery along with my sleeve.

Have any of you experienced issues with taste? I seem to dislike the taste of anything I eat, especially sugary things(which is good), but it is a little disappointig because nothing tastes good(except for fruit).

I was the same way after surgery. I'm 6 months out now, and do not have my superhero sense of smell anymore.

My bionic smell is fortunately subsiding. It rears up once and a while for short periods of time, but I am hopeful that I will not be going half-a-year or more with this problem.

I lost my sense of smell in an accident when I was 13 so would give anything to acquire this super power. I am worried about my taste however. I'm a cake decorator/baker and generally love to cook and try new things. My family loves to be my guinea pigs but generally if I'm going to put something on my sale list I need to know what it tastes like. I know not a great occupation for somebody who is looking at wls, but it is what it is. I've gone from eating whole pieces of cheesecake, cakes, etc to eating a bite just to know the taste. And been able to lose 34.8lbs pre op while doing so. I am worried about the future though if my taste is extremely altered

You're sense of taste is also messed up for awhile too, but not forever, just like bionic smell doesn't last forever

Sometimes it happens when your body is in ketosis from high Protein diet. It should subside.

Best of luck!

My personal thought is that your nose is just returning to "normal" smelling power after years of bombarding our taste buds with crap. Processed, chemical crap that destroys our taste buds and sense of smell.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
