icuwalsh 0 Posted October 27, 2006 I'm looking at getting the band in December. What is the pre-op diet? I know each doctor is different so everyone's will be different. I haven't recieved this information from my doctor yet. BTW - Dr. Spiegel - Houston Texas. Thanks for the info. :hungry:

Betsyjane 2 Posted October 27, 2006 I'm scheduled in a few weeks, and he just said to not eat like its the Last Supper and eat and say goodbye to all my favorite foods. He said not to gain weight...... I asked him about it and he said he doesn't have a pre-op liquid diet or anything.
Katgirl 0 Posted October 28, 2006 I did not have to follow a pre-op diet. I ate whatever I wanted up until the evening before my surgery, and loved every minute of it *grin*. However, all Dr's. are different. My Dr. is very strict now (post-op); I must stay on Clear Liquids for 30 days (actually it works out to 40 - my first fill isn't until Nov. 23rd). You just have to keep telling yourself that "this is not forever". Eventually, you will be able to eat near everything you want (my understanding), but in smaller amounts, which allow you to lose the weight. Cheers. Kat. kimberly150 1 Posted October 28, 2006 I am TRYING on my 10 day preop liquid diet (low sugar, low carb, low fat, high protien). I can tell I have already lost a few pounds.
BettyBoo9137 0 Posted October 29, 2006 I am scheduled to be banded on November 15, 2006. My doctor said no liquid diet pre-op, but post op 15 to 20 days liquids, Soups then I can try to eat mushed up foods. High Protein, then veggies, then fruit. I think every doctor is different. Good Luck to you!
Lady Janey 0 Posted October 29, 2006 I have to do 3 weeks of Optifast (5 box drinks and One Bar a day) becasue of fatty liver. But otherwise, if your BMI is 41 or above Colubia Presbyterian hospital in New York puts you on Optifast for 2 weeks, if it's 40 or below, you get a slim fast like diet: Protein Drinks for Breakfast lunch and snack and a low cal low fat dinner.< /p>
Betsyjane 2 Posted October 29, 2006 Why do any of it? Is it to reduce the fat around your tummy too, so your band won't loosen up so fast as you lose weight. I'm just trying to figure out why I'm not supposed to do anything pre-op......
Lisa G. 4 Posted November 2, 2006 I was told that the liquid pre-op diet was to shrink the liver back away from the stomach as well as reducing the fat from around the stomach.
kimberly150 1 Posted November 2, 2006 Clear liquids for 30 days? Or full liquids like Protein shakes, Soups, ect? I think it would be really hard to get 60 gm/day of Protein in on clear liquids. Congratulations on your surgery. I did not have to follow a pre-op diet. I ate whatever I wanted up until the evening before my surgery, and loved every minute of it *grin*. Kleigh830 0 Posted November 6, 2006 :hungry: My daughter and I are scheduled for Nov 17 ('06) with no pre-op diet instructions from the dr. I have however put both of us on a no fat/no sugar pre-op diet. I believe its extremely smart to do, 1) the no fat is for the liver and 2) the no sugar is so I, (we) don't have the horrid sugar withdrawals post-surgury. I would much rather experience the nauseous headache faint feelings of sugar withdrawal now then post-op. (especially on a 1500 mile plane ride home)
dpingl 0 Posted November 7, 2006 I have been on liquids for two days now. YIKES, I am having terrible headaches but I know it will be worth it! I have surgery tomorrow @ 10:00AM AND then I go to clear liquids for 4 days, then mush for the next 3/4 days.
