Eyesight changed immediately after surgery

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on Monday and woke up from surgery to realize that my eyeglass prescription was too strong. I have been nearsighted with the same prescription for years. I thought by now my vision would go back to where it was but nope! Guess I will need a new prescription. Weird, huh?

Are you still on pain meds? A lot of pain meds have a side effect of messing with your vision. Mine did! If that's the case, your eyesight will go back to normal after the meds are completely out of your system.

The drugs they use to put you out for surgery can affect your eyesight. It takes awhile to get out of your system. I would wait before getting a new prescription!

mine changed also, but it was from my blood sugar dropping so fast

Thanks everyone - yes, going to wait before getting a new prescription. Wouldn't be up to going out to the doctors office anyway :) I've had general anesthesia before, and these pain meds, but never this outcome. Really weird!

Yes, as someone said, it may be your blood sugar dropping. As these levels adjust, so does your eyesight.

I was sleeved on 12/17. My eyesight changed as well. It was necessary for me to wear my Mom's reading glasses to read everything! I removed my Dramamine patch in the evening of 12/19. My vision has since cleared up and is back to normal.

I think you're on to something...removed my patch last night and woke up to normal vision again!

It could be the meds but not from the pain aspect but from the dryness. Many medications ( especially that nausea patch) dry out the eyes and mouth. I have Sjogren's, an autoimmune disease that is dry eyes and mouth. When your eyes are dry, your vision changes. Your tears create a film that is important to the health and working of your eyes. There are lots of stories like yours of Sjogren's patients going to their eye doctor saying I can't see with these glasses but when he tests them, it varies, depending on the moisture level of their eyes.

Also right after surgery, you are dry. During the surgery they did put ointment, yes, kind of like Vaseline, in your eyes to keep your eyes safe ( no harm to your corneas) during surgery. It is the same stuff I use daily. Anesthesiologist are responsible for caring for those kinds of things during surgery. Hospitals are generally dry air atmosphere, you aren't drinking, and yeah you may have an iv but it isn't your regular condition. Your mouth is dry, your lips feel chapped, and the same goes for your eyes.

Another factor if you have any double vision, is that some medications can affect the muscles around your eyes. They don't affect all muscles but those tiny muscles and it is a great affect if you aren't eating. You use those muscles to adjust your eyes gently and focus. Think of what you do when you squint. That is those muscles doing their maximum work.

So wait and see if your vision how your vision is after a few days.

I'm currently experiencing the same thing. I can't even see my phone and my new glasses now don't fit my vision. I hope this goes away. Has anyone experienced excessive thirst? I am drinking alllll day and still my mouth feels dry and desperate for a drink.

Before you run off and spend a bunch on new glasses consider that your medication may be contributing to this.

I am four months out as well and I thought my eyes were just getting worse because of age. I don't even wear my current glasses because they don't help at all. I never made the connection that this had something to do with my WLS. Is there any research done on this?

The same thing happened to me, and it did get a little better over time, but overall my eyesight is worse than it was prior to surgery. And I had had general anesthesia in the past with no ill effects too. I'm in my 40's, and thought maybe I was just really vulnerable, since many people's vision starts to worsen in this decade....but not overnight, like it happened for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
