Thoughts on Dr. Almanza

Recommended Posts

I am looking into going for the sleeve with Dr. Almanza, however I am curious how others experiences have been with him. Any comments, good or bad, are appreciated.

There are other threads addressing Dr Almanza.. Many had good experiences but there were some very negative experiences reported as well. (leaks) Also some don't like that he does a lot of surgeries in a day. I do not have any personal experience to share, but please look at the other threads with his name in it for the info.

not a hater, but i was scheduled with Dr. Almanza for Jan 11, 2013, but I decided to go with another doctor Sergio Quiones only bc Dr. Almana performs like 12 surgeries a day, you sit and wait your turn, he starts with the lowest bmi and works his way to the highest, it was just to impersonal for me.

I've read good. I've read about others who have heard about bad, and I've seen one first hand account of bad. However, I've had several family members and several friends have this surgery here in the states... and one of them got DEATHLY ill. I really think it's the luck of the draw. Whatever is destined to happen will happen. I'm not saying that you should try your luck in some back ally with a scruffy looking guy named Joe, but I am saying is there is ALWAYS a risk, regardless of where in the world, or who in the world, is doing your surgery. Do what you feel is right. If you have doubts, change it. If you are comfortable, do your thing!

Best of luck either which way you decide to go. I slapped down my deposit for Dr. Almanza this morning. Holy crap what a big fat step that was!! (The only kind of steps I take hahaha)

Dr Almanza did my surgery in July 2012 I have read how he does 12 or more surgeries a day all I can say is this there were 6 of us when I did my surgery and he only has 8 beds so I can not see where people come up with the inflated numbers.

I will go on to say I have had friends that have gone to him and I would do it all over again with him if I had to. I have not had any complication and made it past my goal weight loss in 4 months I lost 110 pounds to date and for the past 6 weeks I did not ever stick to a diet I did not Gain or lose during the period of time but I had also reached my goal weight and past it by 10 pounds

James what was your starting weight if you don't mind sharing? Congrats on the loss... That's an entire person!!! I never really thought about how much I needed to lose until I realized I'm literally twice the woman I should be for my height  Very glad to hear you had a good experience.

My best friend and I went to Almanza (a year apart). We both are doing awesome! She's below goal and I've lost 37 pounds in two months. If there's anything specific you'd like to know just ask.

I too had Almanza and everything turned out fine. However the things others have brought up like too many surgeries a day and the Hospital Jerusalem being less than optimal are true. Had I done more home work I probably would of gone somewhere else.

Everything was just "OK", not great, not poor either, just "acceptable".

I just read your experience Reginator... Thank you so much for sharing this information. And about the little boy, it blows my mind that a surgeon would even consider doing the surgery on a pre-teen that wasn't even overweight.

If he was obese then,I can understand, a lot if surgeons here do bariatric surgery on pre teens, but it is bmi based, some of doctors in Mexico will do the surgery regardless to the bmi. If my child was obese or had a high bmi, I would most definitely let them have surgery, I have been an overweight child...not fun....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
