When to eat....

I really want some sauteed spinach! I'm six weeks out. No nutritionist and had surgery in Mexico. When is it safe to eat cooked greens like kale and spinach?

Also, I really want a fish or shrimp taco! What about corn tortillas? (I'm making my grocery list haha). I really don't want to eat low carb. It's never been successful for me and I don't feel good or normal without carbs. When did everyone start adding carbs back into your diet? I know white flour, rice, Pasta is no bueno. I started the habit of eating whole grains before surgery.

I've been eating carbs pretty much all along. (I'm 4 weeks today). I'm getting about 40g a day. Don't know about flour (I'm eating things with it), been eating chicken and rice Soups. No Pasta, but never liked it anyway. Could you eat the fish without the taco? I was told not to eat fibrous vegetables for at least a couple of months as it is difficult for the stomach to break down. Not sure if greens would qualify.

After having bouts of low energy, my nut suggested I increase healthy carbs by adding veggies to my Soups. It did the trick for me and I never looked back. The body needs carbs for energy. Increased energy translates to increased activity for me, and therefore, increased weight loss. It worked for me.

As far as spinich goes, it is one of the most fiberous of veggies behind kale. I didn't eat it cooked, but I'm sure that would break it down more and make it more digestable. You are just going to have to experiment. Try just a bite, chew it well and wait 5 minutes before trying another.

I re-introduced leafy green veggies slowly starting with iceburg lettuce, then adding romain, then spinach and finally kale. Started at about the 4 month mark and it took another 4 months before my stomach was able to handle kale.

You have to remember the stomach is the mechanical part of digestion and you just removed 85% of that factory. You gotta chew more to replace some of that ability and re-introduce foods slowly. At least that is what I did and it worked for me. Other's milage may vary.

I still avoid breads, rice, potatoes and Pasta. For me, they are just nutritionally irrelevant for the amount of space they take up. I'll have a bite occassionally if I am ahead of the game for the day nutritionally.

4 months?!? Wahhh! Before surgery I ate spinach daily. Thanks for the replies. I'll look for other veggies.

And I'll eat my taco without tortilla. Shrimp diced tomatoes and ava ado with cilantro, cumin and smoked paprika Greek yogurt with lime sounds yummy!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
