Boy did I mess up!

Leaks are a big fear of mine so I read a lot of threads concerning them.

I am not in any way advocating eatting wrong but many do and post of their slip ups and progress without issue. Also we are all aware of how much doctors orders vary. Some doctors have no restrictions following surgery and others have weeks of liquids only prior to and following many weeks after.

I am suspecting leaks are more often caused my faulty staple lines or skin deteriorating around staple line than by wrong foods busting them open. That said I guess we should do all we can to be sure we don't bust a staple but I fear in the end it is all just bad luck' date=' doctor misstaple, or bad tummy tissue that is goning to get us.

One cookie will not defeat you it is the pattern of behaviour that will determine your future.[/quote']

Actually my current nut has seen one death and three leaks all caused by the patients "slip ups". Mine was the second medical error leak (meaning I did nothing wrong). Her doc gets other doc's mistakes, hence the two cases. These are all recent patients.

I often don't comment on these threads because they tend to peeve me off. It's not a "slip up" it's a risk. How much is a freaking cookie worth? Do you want a tube stuck in your lungs attached to a pump for days on end? Care to share the feeling of collapsed lungs? Ever have a J tube? A cookie or a piece of toast could cause you to know the pain associated with these procedures. it's not worth it!

It happens! I am glad you are okay. Per my surgeon if you must eat somthing and can't resist it. Just make it puree. I am 1 1/2 post off, and started puree food on Monday. Last night I wanted a little birthday cake. So I put a small spoon of it in the blender with a tsp of milk. Ate 2 bites and it gave me the tasted I wanted.

One of the best things that I've found that helps me not slip up is that I look up the calories and carbs of something before I eat it. This helps keep things in perspective for me and less likely to indulge. It isn't worth the 160 plus calories.

Iggy

I get where your coming from and that the cookie or toast is not worth the pain. For the record I am sticking to my purée.

With some doctor's allowing all food following a few days of liquid I don't think we can say anyone food is a risk if chewed properly. I think it is a splendid idea to purée what you can't resist at least the consistency of food should be right.

The issue to be is patterns of behavior. We must set better pattern for good results

As far as a leak goes, some people are allowed crackers during the pureed stage. Your saliva begins the breakdown of carbs and I'm pretty sure it has no chance against stomach acid! I think your safe.

  • I moved onto Protein, veggies and fruits after two weeks. While the cookie isn't the best thing as far as a meal choice, it's not the end of the world. It's just one of those horrible slider foods, like crackers, chips and other little calorie laden Snacks that we need to stay the heck away from.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
