I understand that using a straw is supposed to cause bloating/ air in your sleeve. My question is - is this true? Has anyone on here tried using a straw?

I've never had an issue with straws but every person is different..

yes it can cause air if you are not careful. The biggest reason is that they don't want you to drink to much at one time. It's easier to control to sip than a straw. If you are careful it isn't a problem, but if you slip up it can be painful. Good Luck

Nope. there is NO issue. You do not swallow any more air than when you sip a cup straight. This is just an old wives tale. I've been using straws for the 2 years I've been post op, yes I get gas occasionally but no more so than when I DON'T use a straw, it's just part and parcel of having a teeny tiny stomach.

I'm almost 7 months out and have been using straws regularly since the beginning with no issues. It helps me get more fluids in.

I never drink without a straw. I did drink straight from a cup one day and it was uncomfortable for me.

out of habit I drank from a straw on two occasions in the last 2 weeks both times I became very uncomfortable

It did not help that I was drinking and eating (though it was all soft food so not sure it counts as eating)

anyhow once caused, pain, burps and hiccups and the other time caused me to expel the contents of my sleeve.

Now when they bring the straw I have them take it away....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
