Well....I am testing with pretty good wine' date=' not crappy wine. And only reds, not white. And only drier reds. So that will figure in. I am using keytone strips to test my urine samples...before, during, and after. Also to be considered is that just because you are not in ketosis does NOT mean that you aren't losing weight. But I am not studying that. Just the impact of dry reds, typically cabs and merlots, on the results shown on keytone strips.[/quote']

What you are doing is not good science. Basically ketones are made when fat (your body fat OR fat you eat) and from alcohol. What is not needed for fuel will be spilled into the urine you are testing. Alcohol will test the same as body fat will, in fact your ketones could go up when drinking, only it's alcohol burning not fat. Most often you might see a diluted number because you've added liquids to your body and your urine is diluted. Also if you have just finished work, or have had a busier day than normal your body will need more energy so it will spill less ketones into your urine. This does not mean that you are not burning fat, it just means that your body is using some of what you've burned.

Someone not in ketosis can register in ketosis with high alcohol consumption. But when sober they'll pop right back out. Some people who are in ketosis will not register on strips because they are using all of the available energy efficiently. Strips just tell you that there are ketones in your urine, but they don't tell you the source. Drinking a glass of good red wine won't necessarily be a waste of time....it is good wine :) But testing your urine after it does not tell you anything scientifically viable.

(My husband is a chemical engineer....if I just bored you to death with that, you should hear him explain it!!!!)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
