Surgery tomorrow! Nervous and having second thoughts...Doc may do a RNY instead

Recommended Posts

I am having second thoughts...nervous...worried. In particular, the doctor said that if the scar tissue from my eroded band is too bad that he may not do the sleeve but do an RNY instead. My current thinking is that if he goes in and it is too bad, that I might rather just keep my stomach intact. Maybe it's the universes way of telling me that I shouldn't get the sleeve.

I am feeling guilty, and silly for even being here...and a little sorry for myself that I got to this point. What is wrong with me? Oh geez, I don't know if I can go through with this.

Any words of wisdom?

Sending positve vibes your way. It sure does seem like those lap bands are a lot of trouble. I got sleeved in Mexico about three weeks ago. There was a girl from the board there also named Charissa. She had the same thing going on but Dr. Ponce was able to get the eroded band out and sleeve her with no problem. She wasn't sure if she'd wake upi with a sleeve or an RNY. I know every situation is uniqe and individual but thought it might be comforting to read about someone with the same issue. She had an incredibly easy recovery, too. Maybe she'll see this and post to you.

Now take guilt and flush it down the toilet. You are doing something good for yourself and you definitely need to get that band out of your body. Keep us posted. :)

Thanks PetraLuxor--sometimes it's nice just to know you aren't alone. I appreciate the sympathy. I hope your recovery is going well.

The thing about RNY is - that it IS reversible. Both my parents got it this summer and has changed their lives (my dads diabetes is practically cured) I think when it comes to your health or how much weight you have to lose - you just have to think about if its worth it. Everyone is different - my mom can practically eat anything a sleever can - (chewed well anyways) except carbonated drinks. She said more than anything it just made her not want soda (and she is more of a wine drinker anyways) My dad is a total health nut now with all the weight he has lost and so nothing bothers him anymore. I just got sleeved on 12/12 and yesterday was questioning if I made the right choice - thinking about all the nasty Protein Shakes and mushy foods - but each day has gotten better. after seeing how healthy my parents are and how much progress people have made on here - i am beyond excited and am glad i made the choise because i am excited to start having a healthy lifestyle! best of luck to you!

Wondering how you made it through? I know from experience scar tissue can be tricky?

Thanks for checking in. I was able to be sleeved. I am feeling great and couldn't be happier. Had my second leak test today and my little belly looks like a happy noodle. My surgery was pretty long but Dr. Aceves was able to do his magic. My experience with Dr. Aceves, Dr. Campos, Yolanda, and the entire team down here has been really great.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
