No milk?

Recommended Posts

Okay so I'm definitely not lactose intolerant because I can have yogurt and ice cream, BUT milk makes me feel horrible.. What gives??? I was a huge milk lover Pre surgery and now I've tried it twice since surgery and can't stand it, nor can I stand almond or soy :( any ideas or suggestions?

Remember you cant produce the necessary enzymes to break it down in large quantities right now. I would avoid liquid milk for a while and keep trying it as you get farther out from surgery.

I read that there are varying degrees of lactose intolerance and while some people may not be able to tolerate any dairy, others might be able to tolerate only certain types (which sounds like what you're experiencing).

Different dairy products have differing amounts of latose in them depending upon their processing. Higher fat products such as ice cream are often tolerable to those who can't tolerate milk; ditto for yogurts and cheeses (my wife fits into this category after her DS.) Lactaid milk is available for those who are lactose intolerant as is lactaid tablets that can be taken before/with dairy. This may resolve over time or it may not - YMMV

Milk bothers me also. I went to soy milk and it still felt heavy on my stomach, so now I do almond milk. It taste just as good as any of the other milks, or it does to me.

When you make yogurt, the probiotic bacteria eat up the lactose in milk and form yogurt. That's why plain yogurt is so sour... because the bacteria have eaten all the sweet lactose! This is how you can tell the difference between lactose intolerence and an actual milk allergy. Lactose intolerent people can have yogurt. Milk allergy sufferere cannot.

Aha, that could be it... Going to try again in a few months I suppose

I never had prob with milk until after surg. Switched to Lactaid milk. It's fine. I ran out of Lactaid and had a little bit of a shake with reg milk, and was miserable all day. Made a special trip to the store just to get the Lactaid!! I am 7 wks out.

This is very helpful. Thanks everyone! I had Greek yogurt with banana Protein power and 1% milk to make it smooth and I had diarreha. I had the same kind of episodes before surgery just not as violent. I'll stick with almond milk and try the lactaid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
