Coughing up green mucus?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm three days post op and it's rough.

Have any of you experienced coughing episodes with green mucus? Worried about an infection.

I was sleeved Monday and am hacking up a thick yellow mucus, figured it was a combination of the weather change and that I quit smoking.

I was coughing up mucus for about 5 days. My doc said it was a side effect of the anesthesia..

If you are concerned have it checked out. I had a anesthesia before and did not have any cough afterwards. But I agree with your concerns If continued "Green" mucus needs to be checked out.

Congrats on your new Sleeve

Good luck.

Its normal if they intubated you during surgery. Keep coughing you don't want to let it build up. They had me doing deep breathing in order to get it moving in the hospital.

Green mucus isn't normal. White yes, green no.

I had it too, only in the morning and a small amount.. Freaked me out a little at first but went away.. Didn't ask a Dr about it but the incubation and anesthia comments above sound right. If worried, always ask your Dr.

It's from the anesthesia. To prevent from getting pneumonia cough it up and spit it out! Hold a pillow over your stomach and cough or huff really hard so u can.get the mucus out!

My doc warned me ahead of time about this. You need to take SLOW & LONG deep breaths in. Inhale as slow & deeply for as long as you can. My doc said to do this 10 times every hour while awake for the first week. It acts as a fan & drys out your lungs, preventing pneumonia.

I've been doing the breathing exercises every hour. Luckily I don't smoke - one less thing to suffer through :-).

Coughing it out is painful - it happens about twice a day. I guess I'll text my dr about it.

Thank you all - love the feedback.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
