Can't hardly "eat" anything

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am 10 days post op and was excited when my doctor approved me moving on to Phase 2 a few days ago. Phase 2 for me is pureed foods such as puréed oatmeal, cream Soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, etc. Unfortunately I take about two bites and I feel very full. This fullness lasts for hours and I can't take anything else in. I am thinking about going back to liquids to be able to get all my Protein and liquids in. Is this to be expected every time I advance to a new phase?

Hi! I wouldn't go back to ALL liquids. At 10 days out I was still drinking 2-3 Protein Shakes, and didn't rely on my food for Protein. At this point you want to make sure that you don't get dehydrated and that you do get in your protein. How you do it really depends on you and your new tummy. :-)

First day home I barely got anything down. Seriously took all I had to get half a Protein shake and some broth,, and popsicle. Today is going a tad better.

Gonna try to move to phase 2 next week. Looking forward to the Soup the most I think.

I think getting all the Protein down is gonna be the death of me!

What type if Protein shakes are you all using? I'm not getting my Protein in. I had surgery on Monday dec 10th. Help!!?!

Pre-made ones help. A lot of people swear by costco premier shakes. You need to find something that you like. As my NUT told me, if you don't like it, you won't drink it.

I also drink the ready-to-drink premier shakes from costco. the only kind i like unless i add Peanut Butter or fruit to a blended shake. Good luck!

It's hard at first but gets easier. Your introducing food back into your stomach. I wouldn't go back to all liquids because your stomach won't get used to real food.

I like the Chike brand Protein Shakes. They come in banana, strawberry, orange cream and your typical chocolate and vanilla. The contain 28 grams of protein and if you can add 1 cup of skim milk, it takes it to 36 grams of protein! It definitely takes a couple hours to get down but you can knock out over half your protein requirements in the morning which sets the tone for your day! But as I have read many times over, everyone has different tastes when it comes to protein. I just try to sample every brand I can to get to what works for me. Good luck!

Thanks for the reassurance. I am taking it slow and having one maybe two puréed meals a day. This process is really trial and error to see what works best for me.

It definitely gets better as the days go by. When I first got home I was exactly the same as you. I joked that my new full time job became drinking those little one ounce cups every 10-15 minutes and then keeping track of all those little cups. sugar free Popsicles really became my saving grace as far as getting liquids in. Protein is a constant struggle still for me so don't feel alone with that issue. Good luck to you and keep positive!

Thanks Doxieville! I am definitely trying to focus on the liquids and Proteins first. I know this all requires patience and figuring out what works for me.

By the way, I had the pleasure of being an owner of a beautiful long haired doxie named Heidi. She has moved on to doggie heaven but was the light of my life! Wonderful dogs!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
