Anyone have the Sleeve and then get the Band too?

Recommended Posts

I am about 6 months out and from the beginning my restriction has not been there like it should. I have thought from the get go that not enough of my stomach was removed or that the bougie they used was too big. I am now considering talking to the doctor about getting the band in ADDITION to my sleeve.

Does anyone know anything about this? Anyone been through it?

you have lost almost 100 pounds! I think that is awesome!!

I have never heard of anyone getting the band after sleeve. It will be interesting to hear if anyone did :)

You have lost 100 lbs in 5 months. That is amazing. Just keep following what you are doing.

I've heard of people getting a band around their sleeve but this was on the lapbandtalk.com website and it was a surgeon saying that he's seen it *shrugs*. I personally would rather get resleeved or get the DS. I would never get a lap band at all. I think Carnie Wilson got the lapband after gastric bypass, I'm not sure how that works either.

I agree with being resleeved or DS and would also never get the band.

I can't imagine going for the band after being sleeved, and I'm suffering with the "overconsumption" issue you mention - I've heard too much skepticism from patients and doctors alike about the long-term effectiveness of the band.

Better to get the sleeve revised. But based on what you lost, are you sure your sleeve isn't ok as it is now? I don't feel the same restrictions as others either, but I've lost 41 lbs in 4 weeks - my POV is that my calories, despite being higher than most, are way under where they would be on a normal diet, and as long as I am losing weight the surgery is effective.

How much can you eat? I eat 1500 calories a day and I am 7 months out. Hasn't slowed down my weight loss though so I see no problem. If you are having success, which it seems you are, you should reconsider getting another surgery. Especially the lapband. I have read so many stories about problems with the band, but the most upsetting thing I've read about it (and this was on lapbandtalk.com, our sister site) is that it actually reinforces bad eating habits. Fibrous, dense foods have difficulty going down and can cause pain and discomfort with the lapband. But slider type foods go down without pain. Patients end up eating slider foods more often because its the only way they can eat pain free, and who can blame them? But by eating the sliders they actually gain weight, instead of losing it.

I would get a second opinion and get resleeved or DS if needed. You don't want a band, think of all the reasons you got sleeved instead of banded.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
