Surgery scheduled! Normal to feel like I want to eat like a pig until then?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is officially scheduled for January 9th!!! My surgeon said to not eat like it's my last meal leading up to surgery. Struggling with that!!! Anyone else's experience with this? Did you eat what you wanted, and either regretted it or happy you did it??? Thank you!!! :)

Yes! I had my "Last Supper" several times before my surgery! :)

My doctor has you go on a liquid diet for 2 weeks pre-op. I did have a 'last supper' before I started the liquid diet. I know I won't be eating fried seafood (live in MA on the coast) again, so I had a last supper of fried clams! It tasted good, but because I had been eating low fat, low carb before then - it didn't sit well. Good luck!

I had tons of food funerals before surgery. It was weird because the closer I got to surgery the less I wanted to eat... I did stick to my 10 day liquid diet before pre op. It was almost a relief to start the liquids after all the food funerals!

lol

I hit a couple of my favorite spots before I had surgery. It's only natural. Dr. didn't make me go on 2 week liquids, said it would just piss me off anyway.

I ate like a pig up until I started the pre-op diet. Ironically, that was the day after Thanksgiving. There are actually a few things I wish I had eaten before doing it because I probably won't get to eat them again. I think food funerals are very common for most who have WLS. Don't beat yourself up.

I also had many food funerals before the liquid diet but I have not cheated on the liquid diet or after.

I'm also currently going through this, although I am trying to keep it reigned in by allowing up to only 1 food funeral per day and also offsetting it by having a Protein Shake for Breakfast (I figure that will help me ease into the pre-op diet also).

I took a week of food funerals (no pre-op diet for me) and in fact had my last pig-out end right at the moment I was required to stop eating or drinking the day before surgery! Which I wouldn't recommend, btw. Pastrami + surgery = bad idea.

But I will say this - I know many people who say "you know, I'm just fine eating" and I feel the same way too - only 4 weeks out I have had no problems eating anything I've tried, and I'm pretty confident I'll be able to eat what I want, only in smaller quantities. This also helped me get over "head hunger" - "I could eat that, but it would last 4 meals" is actually a great feeling!

Enjoy! Don't feel guilty about it. Right now I'm thinking I missed a few favorites!

No.. My doctor makes patients be at a certain goal weight before they will even schedule the surgery. And they weigh you at every appointment leading up to the surgery. If you're even an ounce over your goal weight they reschedule your surgery. On the day of surgery you also have to be at or below goal weight once you're in the hospital gown. If not they will not do the surgery. You're not doing yourself any favors by eating all of that food before your surgery. It is just more weight you will have to lose afterwards. Think twice before you chow down.

I ate everything I could get my hands on before the liquid diet started!

I had a few food funerals before going on the diet. Not only did I want to eat my favorites one last time, but I wanted to have some sort of closer with the types of foods that have been such an ipmortant part of my life. While I might be able to eat these foods again, I felt that it was important to myself to say "goodbye" to them. So yes I think a food funeral is normal, having done so myself. However, you do have to consider what the dr requires. If,like the previous poster, you must reach a goal weight, then I would not suggest many funerals. You know what you have to do to prepare for surgery, and if you think you can have a funeral, then go for it. If not, then don't. Good luck!

Yup I had the food funeral and from my understanding all my friends did also the weeks leading up to surgery. I think all of us gained before surgery but none of us seem to regret it. I don't regret pigging out with my old stomach :) My surgeon doesn't require a pre-op diet and we didn't have to do the supervised diet. My way of eating has definitely changed for the better and I have no desire to eat till I'm stuffed or puking like some did after they were sleeved. I eat till I'm satisfied and then stop. I think without the food funeral I would of kept trying to over stuff my sleeve because I didn't get it out of my system.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
