six weeks out

Does anyone find that the first meal of the day is the most "painful" I'm sitting here eating a scrambled egg, and it hurts going down. As the day goes on i feel like I'm able to tolerate more.

I generally drink a Meal Replacement shake for this reason. I was never really a Breakfast person, and surgery didn't change that. This way I get my Protein and Vitamins and I don't have to cook anything or take the time to eat it.

I'm still at home, but as soon as i return to work, i will probably switch over to drinks. My Dr is very adamant on me not doing shakes. He doesn't want me to drink my calories. At times i feel like I'm winging this alone. He said to push the Protein but not in liquid form

Eh, I'm getting a ton of Vitamins that I wouldn't otherwise be getting. I could eat straight Protein (fish, eggs, whatever) for breakfast but there's not going to be nearly as much Protein and Vitamins in it as there is in a 170 calorie shake.

I have the rest of the day to eat "real" food, and I do. I normally eat some cottage cheese, a Protein Bar if I'm in a hurry, fish, almonds, turkey or other deli meat every couple hours during the day. Otherwise I'd never get in my 70 grams required protein.

I like to start the day with a cup of hot Decaf tea - I think my new stomach prefers the heat. Breakfast is kinda tough, and lunch is the best meal for me as far as being able to tolerate the food. I do still have one Protein Shake a day - I prefer not to drink my calories either, but I can't come near the daily Protein target without one.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
