401k to fund MX surgery?

Recommended Posts

As anyone taken a medical hardship withdraw from 401k to pay for surgery in Mexico? I have paperwork from my surgeon in America saying I need surgery. But if insurance won't pay, I have 401k and was just wondering if they have requirements on where you can have surgery.

Omg change your prof pic!!!!! *shudders*

I'm using my 401k as well. I'm required to submit an invoice showing the cost and that payment in full is required before services are rendered as this surgery is excluded from my insurance. I got said invoice from my coordinator. You may also be able to do a 401k loan which may have less hoops to jump through. Each company policy is different. I hope that helps.

Yes, each 401(k) plan can be different, as the previous poster said. Some plans allow loans, and some plans allow hardship withdrawals for medical expenses not covered by insurance. Our plan allows the hardship withdrawals for such medical expenses, but where the surgery would be done is irrelevant. Documentation of expense would be required, but no documentation required on where or who did it. However, I don't know if travel expense for medical services would be allowed.

And if you are a certain age, usally 59 1/2, some plans allow in-service withdrawals for any reason.

Just check with your HR person or your 401(k) plan administrator.

I did a 401k loan for my surgery in Mexico. It was very quick and easy. There were no questions ask as to what I was going to do with the money. Everything was done online and the money was in my bank within 4 days after my application.

Yes, I did a 401 hardship withdrawal. It covered the surgery, and I was allowed to get a small additional amount for the travel and stay in Cancun. Worked like a charm! Especially, when I read from others, how difficult their Insurance company was to work with. I also read that it may be tax deductible as well..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
