Is it Possible to Lose too Quickly?

Okay, no one throat-punch me for asking this please. My husband asked tonight whether there was any danger in losing too quickly and I really couldn't answer it.

My BMi is down to 28 and I am still losing 1 lb. per day. I have had two 10-day stalls but aside from that, I lose a lb. a day. This morning I lost almost 2 lbs between yesterday and today.

Should I just be happy with this or could there be an issue or negative health affects?

O,be happy!

And exercise! The only downside,and only for some,will be that the skin cant keep up and there might be a bit more flabby skin.So,tone,tone,tone!

I'm doing "Crossfit" if you've heard of that so toning a LOT. Also, the skin would end up the same whether you lose your weight in 6 months or 9 months, right? And then slowly will tighten up a bit?

I was loosing about a pound a day as well for the first month or two after the surgery. It'll start to slow down, but for right now enjoy the quick weight loss but remember a lot of that weight is fluids, so drink lots of water!!!

I drink 100 ounces of Water per day, so am definitely meeting the requirements for that! I'm 3 months post-op.

I asked my surgeon about this. He said that it doesn't matter how fast or slow you lose. If you're meant to have loose skin, it'll happen regardless. Also there are a lot of factors that come into play as far as loose skin goes such as age and genetics

Thank you! It seems like the pace wouldn't really matter much and if so, only temporarily. Glad to hear your dr. says so!

I'm 26 and I have loose skin around my arms and stomach that is very aparant, I plan to have a Tummy Tuck this year, but I'm still undecided about my arms.

Maybe,but I lost a load of weight two years ago by healthy eating and exercising like a maniac and I had very little lose skin on my legs and arms.My butt also didnt sag at all.I didnt exercise much (play squash) no toning this time and I look like a sharpei dog..lolI have all these smaller skinfolds and the sagging is unbelievable.Exercise while losing makes a huge difference.

The only complication I was advised of when it comes to losing weight quickly (like most sleeve patients will - more than 2lbs a week) was that it can impact the gall bladder and lead to gallstones. I was given medicine to help keep this from happening my first 6 months.

It also depends on how much you have to lose. But I was told by my doc yesterday that losing 1-2 pounds a week like I am is very healthy, FOR ME. Everyone is different. I've got a whacky immune system and the fear is if I lose too quickly it will get even more whacked out. So, once again, the answer lies with the individual person. I know- so frustrating!!

I practical terms NO there is no way to lose too fast. Your body requires energy to live, when you are not eating or eating very little it pulls energy from fat and muscle. The heavier you are the more you must eat to maintain that weight, yes it actually REQUIRES energy to not only haul that fat around but just to feed the cells and create the blood supply to feed it, the skin to cover it, the muscle to carry it, etc.

So the fatter you are the faster you will typically lose as the amount of difference between what you consume and the energy requirements of what you need to maintain is much larger, as you lose weight that gap narrows and the energy requirements to maintain the wight drops closer to what your consumption is - the gap narrows.

So you will only lose the amount of difference between what you eat and what you NEED to eat to stay fat, at first you lose a lot, after some loss you lose less as your energy requirements drop.

I guess that is my question. I had expected my losses to slow by now as I am (as of today) down to a BMI of 27 so not all that overweight. I'm 20 lbs. away from "Normal" weight on the BMI chart but still losing 1 to 1 1/2 lbs per day.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
