Dooter 1,457 Posted December 14, 2012 Ok, all you sea-faring sleevers- I'm the queen of queazy here, and I have not been on a ship since getting sleeved. So- my question is: Does the sleeve (a.k.a. "smaller stomach") mean LESS sea-sickness, or is there no change because it's an inner ear thing, or what's the scoop? I get all kinds of motion sick- airplane, car, small boat, big ship- you name it. Capt. Derel, I hope you see this! What are your best tips to avoid getting green on the high seas? (Do I write for a tabloid or something? WTH?)
Mari_Sem 2 Posted December 14, 2012 As someone who also gets motions sickness I can tell you that the sleeve did nothing to help (or hinder) my motion sickness. Sea-sickness isn't about your stomach it's about your head, if you got sea sick before you'll still get sea-sick now. Make sure to get a prescription for something like transderm scop before going out on a seafaring adventure.
TheGamer 406 Posted December 14, 2012 Yep, as motion sickness is really rooted in your inner ear, the stomach doesn't have much say in the matter.
kyllfalcon 768 Posted December 14, 2012 (edited) Sleeve didn't change anything there. Rather than take drugs, I use a Bracelet that pulses against a nerve in the wrist. It is not hocus-pocus (I have NO tolerance for such foolishness), it works. I get car sick very easily, and could never ride in the back seat. Even riding in the front seat sometimes I get sick on curvy and hilly roads. Then I discovered this bracelet and while it is a tiny bit annoying, it works. I rode in the back of a van from Frankfort, KY to the Frank Lloyd Wright house Falling Water in Pennsylvania, and back, with no sickness whatsoever, until the battery died, then I got sick. Now I keep spare batteries in my purse. It is called ReliefBand. It's not cheap, but it works. Google it. There are lots of other similar devices on the market, none of which I've tried so cannot speak to their effectiveness. EDIT: Just Googled and learned the company has discontinued the ReliefBand and is now selling a similar device by name of Reletex. Even more expensive, but if my ReliefBand dies, I'll still buy it. Rootman 1,101 Posted December 14, 2012 They are right it's the inner ear and the eyes sending conflicting messages about which way is right side up, eyes say one way the inner ear is saying another and the poor brain gets confused and as with many other things it causes dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Dooter 1,457 Posted December 16, 2012 Well poopies. Thanks all. I was hoping. Oh well! I have tried the pressure point wrist bands and they really do help. I might look up the other deal too. Thanks for the info!
GRF018 0 Posted February 7, 2017 I realize this is an old thread, but I have just had an eye opener. I was/am an avid cruiser. We are now on our 90th cruise. I was sleeved in July 2016. Six weeks later I did a cruise without incidence. Now, I am 6 months out and on a cruise, having a lot of sea sickness. I did not realize what it was until day 3. I never had sea sickness before this. I took Bonine, which helped relieve the symptoms. I don't understand what is different now. The size of my stomach shouldn't matter, should it? This could put a serious damper on future cruising, which would make me sad. Is there a chance it's only temporary? trekker954 421 Posted February 8, 2017 Could be rougher seas, smaller ship so more motion. You likely weren't eating much at 6 weeks versus now at six months. I'm six months now and took cruises at 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 4 months. I did not notice any sea sickness. I wouldn't be concerned. It may have been something else and or just not good food choices.Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App
GRF018 0 Posted February 8, 2017 Thanks for your reply. I know I am not getting enough Water, so I'm trying to be more conscious of that. We really are not getting much motion at all, as we are on the biggest cruise ship in the world. Today was a port day, so I feel much better today. This just took me by surprise. Happy cruising to you!
