Advice Please. 6 months Until Surgery

Recommended Posts

What advice would you give someone that has 6 months to prepare for the surgery? What would you have done differently?

Start now. Start eating healthy foods. Start daily exercise. Don't worry about how much weight you lose. What's important is that by the time you have your surgery you have a real understanding of what you need to do to make this succeed. The more you can do now the easier it will be for you later.

I had a caffeine addiction which lead to severe headaches whenever I did not get my normal daily intake of coffee. Months in advance of the surgery I started weaning myself from coffee. Was I ever glad I had done it!

IsB has it right about the diet and exercise.

I agree with both above. I didn't ween off caffeine, and boy did i pay for it. It was the worst headache I ever had. DO NOT GO cold turkey. Also the better shape you are in going into surgery the better and quicker recovery time. After surgery you will need to walk, walk , walk this helps in a number of ways..1 you need to get all the gas out of your system that they pump in there to work so the more you more the quicker it comes out..2nd youo need to move so that you don't develop blood clots in your legs and 3rd you need to move so that you don't get constipated. So the more you can walk prior to surgery the easier it will be to do after surgery. Good Luck

Getting used to the new healthy way of living was key for me. I started having 2 Protein Shakes a day and slowly working myself off the bad foods. That way the pre and post op diet were a breeze because I already had shakes I liked and was use to having them daily. Also like they said, get comfortable with only drinking Water & crystal light. Get rid of all the sodas/ sweet tea/ caffeine now. I was a smoker that ate fast food for every meal and drank a TON of soda at work everyday. I needed that time to rid myself of all the bad habits I had. My surgery has been a breeze, I don't get cravings for bad foods or cigs because I invested the time before the surgery.

Good luck! And we are all here to help!

6 months to prepare for the surgery? What would you have done differently?

lolo1994

WELCOME

you joined VSG board at 5:20 am today 12/13/12 - you are still a virgin ;)

I Would Have

started a blog pre WLS

taken measurements

taken before and "during" pictures

weined off cola and coffee

unfortunately i never did ANY of the above and i am so sad that i didn't

I would have "tried"

watching my food intake, calories, carbs, protein

eating slower

chewing my food to pieces

not drinking 1/2 hr before eating

not drinking with food

no drinking 45-60 minutes after you eat

exercising more

weining off the cola and coffee

for me, at 6 months prior to WLS - i probably wouldn't have been successful at most of the above :( - but if you can do the above to get you prepared for the WLS - good for you - more power to you :)

6 months prior to WLS - the above would been hard for me

6-7 weeks pre WLS - work at the above "I would have tried" to prepare for the sleeve - these are things that you must do post WLS

if i had the willpower to do all the rules that go along with the sleeve - i would always have been a great weight, never had health problems et al

Six months is a long time to wait for the sleeve - but it will be worth it

these are things that you must do post WLS -

practicing these things pre-WLS is important, helpful - so you can get used to your new routine with the sleeve

working towards a wonderful longer, healthier, happier life

i can tell you are a strong, determined, hard working person :) you can do this!!

good luck

take care

ps ............anything i said above that anyone doesn't agree with oops :(

but i really do believe what i said

i'm 11 months and 28 days and ??? hours... post WLS

down 99.2 lbs down (.8 lb from goal and century club) and healthy as a horse!! no more diabetes/insulin - high blood pressure, CPAP

Must have done something right???

kindof long - oooops

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
