Dont want to be disappointed...advice?

Recommended Posts

I am 8 days post op and doing really good (at least I think). I am getting 60grams of Protein a day and about 40 ounces of Water (working on that) and maybe 4-5 spoons of broth.

So.....when I see others who have lost 15-20 pounds the first week I am so happy for them....but disappointed in me. I have only lost 7 pounds since surgery (20 pounds including pre op diet)....am I doing something wrong?

Yep. You are comparing yourself to others. While we all have similar experience, we all experience it differently. Keep your head up. I only lost 10 my first week, but I've lost almost 160 since April this year. We're all different, comparing is not fair to yourself. Enjoy your own journey. :)

Also, when people say they lost 20 lbs in the first week they are generally counting their pre-op so keep that in mind. So, as far as most people count you've lost 27 lbs your first week and are ahead of the game!

That's not always true. There are people that lose 20lbs in a week not counting preop. Mostly the ones with a high Bmi

Why not replace the broth with Water? You need the water way more than the broth at this point. Once you get your water intake up to the minimum then you could start having the broth again. But bottom line, until you get your water intake up everything else should take a back seat.

I just had my 1 week post op visit (12/5/12 sleeve) and like you I lost 10 pounds exactly. At first I was ... What?? Only 10 pounds?? But then I thought .. That 10 pounds is gone forever!!

As far as what you are taking in, my doctor told me, in this order .. Protein (40 to 60 gms ), Water - as much as possible. Aim for or build up to 64 oz., and Gummy Vitamins. That is my orders for the next 3 weeks :). Oh and I can start walking.

Keep your chin up. We got this.

They probably just ate a lot worse than you did pre-sleeve

It took me 2 full weeks to show a "loss" because of all the fluids from the surgery. Once that was resolved I started to see great results. Be patient with yourself and don't compare yourself to others is the best advice I could give. You are doing great!

Keep in mind, anything that you're consuming that is liquid counts towards your total Fluid intake...not just the Water you drink. If you're drinking Protein Shakes you're killing two birds with one stone.

Thank you all!

Yes.....I am getting Protein through shakes as I am still on all liquids. I always wondered if any liquid counted.....so if that is the case I am getting a total of about 60 ounces a day.

I will certainly continue to increase Water everyday.

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to reply. This site is such a blessing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
