Lack of Family Support...

Recommended Posts

I have chosen Dr. Aceves as my surgeon and I am scheduled for January 5th. Deposit has gone through and flights are booked! Other than the normal anxiety and fear I am really struggling with family support. My father does not support this surgery and I was wondering how any of you dealt with a family member who was unsupportive? Are there any websites or aricles I could send him that would ease his mind? Keep in mind, I am young (24) and his youngest daughter...

What reasons does your father have for not supporting the surgery?

My family was incredible supportive but my fiance (at the time) was not. He said a lot of mean things, ridiculed me, patronized me, you name it. I have since gotten rid of him but I remember thinking how difficult it was having someone I loved not support this decision that I knew was right for me. Bring your dad to this site! Let him see posts from people who have had major success with it.

It scares him that I am going to Mexico, he thinks I am going to come back missing a kidney and full of infection. He also thinks now is not the right time to do it as I am under a lot of stress because I just got laid off. I think now is a great time as I can take my time to heal and focus on my recovery! Also I think a piece of it is that my Mom is paying for the surgery and they are divorced (they do not talk at all) and he has some issues with my Mom having some say over this area of my life and he does not as he is not in the same financial position that she is.

So in other words, your dad is a typical dad. I have one of those too. Come to think of it, I am one as well.

I'd be willing to bet when you come back safe and sound and are 50 pounds lighter by next summer he'll be completely over it.

well, from what i have researched, there are lots of good doctors in mexico, and regardless of wether he agrees with your decision or not, with you being his baby girl he should support you no matter what your decision is...do what is best for you and know that this time next year you wl be smaller and healthier????

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
