Anyone see the Oprah show today? It was about gastric bypass and how once someone can no longer overeat, they substitute the addiction with another, like alcohol or sex or some other addiction. The point being that you must deal with why you have a weight problem before you should ever consider weight loss surgery because you may get a "transference addiction". Carny Wilson was a guest. She talked about her alcohol addiction after her surgery and how she overcame that. Has anyone experienced anything like this after lap band surgery?

I definitely do waaay more eBaying than I did pre surgery. I think to curb the boredom that I would normally fill with food. I spend a ton of time on my laptop being an information junkie in general. I think that's because I know myself well enough to know that there are definitely times when I would make a Detour through the kitchen if I didn't have something else occupying my time.

Any addiction is like that though. When you are in recovery from one thing it has to be filled by something else and often for some people that turns out to be another addiction. When I quit smoking it got replaced with crunching ice and now I eat a glass of crushed ice three or four times a day and definitely go through withdrawl if I'm somewhere where the ice isn't available. Weird...I know.

I've already starting looking for a "hobby". If anyone is interested, check out the website listed below. It is knitting/crocheting blankets for animals in shelters; and of course there are others: knitting/crocheting for battered women; homeless, etc. I am going to check out a couple of these others too. Some of them supply the materials too, you just donate your time and labour.

I haven't been banded all that long, but I have seen a little spike in my shopping. I was addicted before surgery, but now it seems dropping sizes makes it a better excuse.

I agree that we should deal with the real reason before surgery, but REALLY how many of us know the real reason? I spent years in counceling for rape and abuse. I could say that is the reason I over ate, but that is something you can never really get over, no matter how much you talk about it.

I hate though that Oprah put such a bad spin on it. It is just another reason for us to be hated or seem lazy because we opt for surgery.

My new addiction is exercise. My husband says I am doing too much . Sometimes I exercise 3 hours a day. My friends say it a good thing or I would have more hanging skin. I am serious about this post. I'm just not sure if its a good or bad addiction.

At one point during the show, (don't get me wrong, I really like Oprah and all of the good she does) it almost seemed like she was saying we should have been able to get to our goal weight like she did. Let's face it, who has access to the best psychiatrist, nutritionist and personal trainers like she does.

I agree Wheezy. I do not want to feel like that from anyone, even Oprah. I can remember she was BIG for many years, and now high and mighty sometimes.

I may be in a bad mood, but I found these guests completely clueless. What? They had no idea that maybe, just maybe, they should get therapy to deal with the issues that caused them to turn to food??? They thought their lives would be perfect after losing weight??? I couldn't summon up much sympathy for these people. They also didn't seem to really want to change. They act as though they are having too much fun.

And Carnie saying that she will always be super-addicted to food (in this show and others)? Damn, maybe she needs a better therapist because food just isn't such a huge deal to me anymore. I don't feel like I want to overeat all day every day as she has indicated. Maybe she needs MY therapist for 10 years.

I doubt this would happen on such a grand scale with the band. One of their biggest issues I'm sure is what a huge mind-fu$k it is to lose so much weight so quickly.

Watch out or you'll be sidelined for 6 weeks undergoing expensive and time-consuming physical therapy and having to forgo your favorite exercise for 6 weeks like me.

So glad to hear your point of view on this subject. You seem to have it together, 131 lbs lost. I applaud you. You are an inspiration to all of us. And maybe your right about how quickly the weight is loss. The lap band was the better choice. Recently, I was doubting my decision not to per-sue the bypass option because my weight loss is sooooo slow.

I am wondering what to do if my surgeon suggests the Bypass for me as opposed to the Band! I really don't know what I'd do.

I love Oprah but she got pure pleasure from this show. I think she wanted to say I told you so, don't get any gastric surgeries. She bit her tongue but you can just see her expressions. She hit her chair at least twice, loudly because she couldn't say what she wanted to.

I thought it was ignorant when Oprah asked the woman who was over 300 pounds, how could she move. WHAT B*&%#??!!! I was 459 and going to the gym before I had surgery. People said and still say how active I am. You don't stop living just because you get fat. It is the fat that can make you stop living. That is why MOST people have gastric surgeries. Piss me off!

I think as a group we should enlighten Oprah about LapBand surgery, if she doesn't already have one. oooppps

LOL Teresita, you know whats so funny, Ive been wondering if Oprah has a lapband too! Have you noticed how she NEVER wants to ever eat anything on her show anymore? Im always thinking its because she's afraid of PBing lol. But then on her road trip with Gail, she ate ice cream which we all know you never PB on really. Kinda makes you go hmmm?? LOL I've been an Oprah show addict since she started.

LOL I think I fell in love with her because she was a confident, fat, black woman. LOL I remember when she could wear the heck out of a scarf. LOL

Now she seems to have forgotten about the fat people. Oh I just love these jeans, bras, dresses all designer who don't go over a size 10. Where were the for real fat people on the bra and jean makeover. HELLO

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
