Am I making the right choice?

Recommended Posts

I went with the choice that made me feel the most comfortable, both with price and experience. I'm paying more for my procedure, but I just felt more comfortable having Dr Alvarez do my sleeve. When I tried to talk myself into going to a different surgeon, I just couldn't do it. Go with your gut!

EXACTLY. I had initially chosen Alvarez, but after researching so many other competent doctors, I could no longer justify paying so much more for Alvarez. If I had ANY reservations at all about the doctor I chose,I'd switch back to Alvarez in a heartbeat. This is such a deeply personal decision and yes, cost does pay a part in it, but cost should not override our instincts.

So I woke up this morning and decided Dr. Garcia it is! I have a few more questions for Alma and I will be locked in by this evening. Thank you everyone for your opinions and support. When I had my Lapband put in 6 in a half years ago I didn't have anyone, when i had it out a year ago i didn't have anyone who understood. It's nice to have support. Thank you all!!

Good for you! Once I decided to go with Dr Garcia I had a sense of peace about my choice. Hooray for us!

My top three choices was Dr. Garcia, Dr. Alvarez, and Dr. Rodriguez. I chose Dr. Garcia and feel safe in my decision.

I just need February to come quick. I think it will considering that it feels like Halloween was yesterday and that Christmas is tomorrow.

65 more days to go.. SMH, RME..

I had mine narrowed to 2 surgeons. Dr. alejandro lopez and dr. Ponce de leon. I went with Dr. Lopez because he always has a second surgeon in the OR with him and he specializes in patients with high BMI which increases the risk.

It really does feel like Halloween was last week. But winters in Ohio draaaaaaaaaaaag!

It is finally winter her in Atlanta- but I think the weather here is bipolar..

It was just 70 degrees on Sunday but by Tuesday it was 30?

If it keeps going on like this, I will be sick!

I didn't research those surgeons - and there wasn't any reason why I didn't. There were so many names when I started!!

On another note, I am looking at my desk. I wish I could take a picture. SF Jello, an orange, a grapefruit, and a bottle of CHERRY COKE. I need to get it together. Water for today ='s ZERO.

Ohio's winters are cold, grey, and miserable. Our weather now is behaving like your weather. Warm. Cold. Damp. Dry. Ugh!!! My sinuses are protesting.

I had my sleeve Dec 3 with Dr Garcia and it was great, I would do it all over again, made me feel comfortable and answered all my question. Couldn't ask for anyone better. I am down 32 pounds.

Please don't worry' date=' I am just like you. Went to Dr Garcia in September for my revision. I was very worried like you he would not be able to do it. Let me tell you, you have picked the right surgeon. He did my surgery no problem and I was not sick, no gas, no pain. I went alone also they will look after you. There will be other patients there too, you will see them at the hotel. If you are booking tomorrow God is guiding you; he won't let you make the wrong decision!

P.S. the benefit of having the band first is that you know what to do with your eating and drinking; I have had no vomiting, no sliming, no over-eating, the absolute best thing I could have done for myself.[/quote']

Did u pay extra for band removal?

Did u pay extra for band removal?

He only charged me $500.00 extra for the revision. I think was a great cost!

I paid $4700.00 for the sleeve

$500.00 for the revision part

$300.00 for an endoscopy

Total $5500.00 what a deal!!

I think so, it takes time to remove it.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
