TheLCSpencer 4 Posted December 11, 2012 Hi All! I am getting sleeved on 1/5 and I have mild asthma. The only other time I had major surgery, there were some complications with the anesthesia.I woke up when I couldn't breathe and was paralyzed to the point where I could not speak to say so. I could hear the staff intubating me and came out of it fine, but recall the whole event. I'm now pretty scared about anesthesia. This isn't stopping me from moving forward with my sleeve. I've voiced this as a major concern to my doctor's team (Dr. Aceves) and I'm very comforted by the fact that I'll be speaking at length with the anesthesiologist prior to the surgery. I'm just still a little nervous. I know I won't FEEL anything, but dear Lord...I do NOT want to wake up, or worse wake up knowing I can't breath (again). Leading me, finally, to my question: has anyone here been sleeved WITH asthma? I'm sure I'll be fine, but I'd love to hear that other post-sleevers are fine and had an okay surgery experience. Thanks all!

TheLCSpencer 4 Posted December 12, 2012 Valdosta, you had no issues with the general anesthesia at all? That's so good to hear!
bittahoney 12 Posted December 12, 2012 I also have asthma and had no problems with surgery. My doctor did give me breathing treatments for the first day after. I did feel phlegmy but that was just from being intubated. My surgery was almost 6 months ago and I haven't needed asthma meds since. I am starting to jog and I am thinking a treatment before jogging would probably benefit me. I am not having full out attacks but just the feeling that I am not expanding my lungs enough and not getting enough air. It does not interfere with jogging and only lasts 2-3 minutes. Good luck with surgery.

GlendaLee 44 Posted December 12, 2012 Another Asthmatic here. I take Advair 500/50 2x a day, and Singulair 1xday. I had no issues at all with anesthesia, and I've had 3 surgeries since Nov. '09 (lap-band in, lap-band out (Sep. '12), and sleeved). Good luck on your surgery and continued successes!
Need-a-Sleeve 211 Posted December 12, 2012 Have had asthma for 56 years, the only problem I had was the acid reflux would start me coughing and then go into an attack. After the sleeve, Dr. Nick puts you on IPPB (intermittant positive pressure breathing) treatments and I had no problems whatsoever. During the late fall with ragweed out, I started having problems but got back on the Singulair and all is good again. Good luck!
