Coffee

Recommended Posts

My nut just told me that I can have one cup in the morning but that I also have to add an additional cup of Water to my daily amount as caffine tends to dehydrate. I am 3 months out from surgery.

I mix Decaf with my Protein Shake every morning since I was 2 months out. I do half coffee, half ready to drink Muscle Milk Cookies 'N Cream.

Caffiene in coffee doesn't dehydrate but doesn't add Water either. It breaks even. coffee has bit of acid, though. Outside of that, coffee Beans are good for human Beans.< /p>

Caffiene is a diuretic, and for people who have underlying medical conditions, it can dehydrate...for us it can most definately contribute to not retaining enough Water.

Short term I stayed away from it until I could drink enough water to offset my coffee intake...now I have slipped a bit and I drink it like I did before surgery - that is all day, but not the 8 oz in 15 minutes! I supplement with water. With the exception of TOM I avoid caffiene in pain killers, which has more caffiene than most cups of coffee (but not mine, lol).

I was sleeved 1-4-12 and I did not drink any until at least March, then by...hmmm...August? I was back up to 2 cups a day...now more...and yes - I know I drink too much coffee. For like the last 30 years (I am 39).

There are actually studies now suggesting that caffeine is not a diuretic. I think the scientific community is divided on this issue. Until a person is far enough post op that he or she has no problem taking enough Water I would error on the side of caution and stay away from caffeine.

thanx for linking that great article about coffee from WEB MD - luv them!! :)

luckily never had the bad side effect, acid

I enjoy an occassional cup of coffee

understand coffee not causing dehydration

but as a diarectic that means you have to drink extra Water since you are urinating more from coffee??

thanx for the info :)

2 lousy lbs hanging around

78 lbs gone forever and a day :)

WooHoo :)

congrats on your success :)

I've been seeing ads that say cola and coffee drinks hydrate you as well as Water does. Is this true?

Answer

from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.

It is true. Researchers used to believe that caffeinated drinks had a diuretic effect. This means that you would urinate more after drinking them, which could increase your risk of becoming dehydrated. Recent research shows that this is not true and that caffeine has a diuretic effect only if you consume large amounts of it — more than 500 to 600 milligrams (the equivalent of 5 to 7 cups of coffee) a day.

Still, caffeinated drinks can make you jittery, sleepless or anxious. Water is probably your best bet to stay hydrated. It's calorie-free, caffeine-free, inexpensive and readily available.

Perhaps our sleeve makes us a bit different than the guinea pig folks they tested. :)

In spite of that, I think there are plenty of reasons to stay away from caffeine that have nothing to do with hydration. Once my chemical dependency was broken, I saw no reason to purposely allow myself to become addicted to caffeine again. And it is highly addictive. Crossover addictions are a very real threat and now that the crutch of food is taken away post op, I'm leary of finding a replacement addiction.

Awww..ya killjoy!;)

You're right, of course. Free is free.

I am an addictive kinda guy. Proved that in the 60's and beyond. I guess coffee is methadone for me. No excuses.

After 2 weeks my NUT said coffee was no problem. I've been following her advice ever since.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
