Too much water cause leak?

Recommended Posts

This is probably a dumb question but just wondering if drinking TOO much Water can cause a leak? I'm only a few days post op and I sip all day long to make sure I'm getting enough Fluid. I really don't have any problem getting it down at all either so I just sip away all day...lol. Has anyone ever heard of getting a leak from this?

Yeah, I agree, unless you are chugging Water there is little risk, and believe me when I say you will NOT want to chug post-op, drinking and eating is generally very unpleasant for the first few weeks or months - as you have probably experienced too.

This was my question as well. I had surgery last week and I am still sipping from those plastic medical cups. So I can go to a regular cup and just sip as long as I am comfortable?

I would try to monitor your intake so you know how much you're taking in, then if you have a doubt about it you could ask your doctor. But it's unlikely you're going to hurt your sleeve sipping Water. Now guzzling may cause you some severe discomfort, but it's not likely to cause a leak. I had my surgery during the summer when it was hot. A couple of times after the first month I worked up a big thirst working out and tried to guzzle some Water because that was my old instinct. I got real bloated real fast and had to slow down. But it passes quickly and you learn not to drink like that anymore.

Thanks! I am measuring my fluids ( crystal light, broth, Protein drinks) and I can tell my sips are getting more comfortable as the days go by and the swelling goes down. My doctor said to listen to my body but I just don't want to mess up any of the surgery I just went through.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
