Dee-Texas 5 Posted December 10, 2012 I have a lapband (2007) and am having a lot of problems. New surgeon (had problems with lapband doctor) did tests and said lapband needs to come out. I want the sleeve...he said since I've not lost all my weight with the lapband...a bypass would be better for me. He said after a year the "non-hungry part of removing the Guerhln gland stops..so the malabsorption and restrictiviness of the bypass is better. I have arthritis in My knees and can't fathom not being able to take nasaids for the rest of my life. Soooo the question is...for those of you that are 2-3 years out...do you still have the non-hunger or is your life...just a diet with watching what you eat and exercising? I made a mistake with the lapband the first time..plus having to self pay for that and now another WLS...I don't want to nor can I afford to make the same mistake again. Thank you for your replies. amytug 996 Posted December 10, 2012 From what I've read, the RNY pouch stretches because its made out if the stretchy part of the stomach, vs. the sleeve, where the stretchy part is removed. This isn't to dh that the sleeve can't stretch but the way I understand it, it's less likely. There was a thread a week or so ago along the same lines, I'll see if I can find it. Well since I'm on my phone I can't link you to that thread, but if you search "sleeve vs. RNY" you'll find it.
PdxMan 4,292 Posted December 10, 2012 Well, I'm not 2 to 3 years out, but crossing the 18 month line soon. As far as the "non-hungry part of removing the Guerhln gland", I can say that what I experience now is the same I experienced early out. I do not have the food cravings or starvation pangs that I had before surgery. For me, I am still getting the benefits of the removal of Gehrlin. I don't see that changing, either, as I would guess that would be something that slowly would increase over time, but it hasn't in no way, shape or form. I still forget to eat a meal on occassions ... ever do that with the effects of gehrlin? I was exercising like crazy for the first 10 months post-op, but since, I have run into health problems and haven't really moved much at all. I follow the basic guidelines of eating my Protein first and other foods next. I don't drink with my meals unless I am needing to get more calories in. I am still losing weight, though. Slowly, but I still am. Dropped 10 pounds since March. I was down 15, so I have been working on getting more calories at times. I think the sleeve it exactly what I needed. I get full with a few bites and can eat whatever I want to. I don't snack anymore and eat nutritiously. I love it. 1 amytug reacted to this
azquilter92 82 Posted December 10, 2012 I still take nsaids. Take 2 alleve everyday, like you I have arthritis and Tylenol doesn't cut it. I told my surgeon, he asked if I was having any problems after taking them and I said no,because im not. I do make sure I take them with food. But thats me. I did stop taking them 2 Weeks before surgery as instructed, and then went almost a month before starting them up again.

Dee, I have the same question. I went to see my first surgeon and he said because my insurance would pay I should get the bypass. I'm not so sure. It felt like he was looking for more money and so concerned with what would be my best option. His reason a was that I would have heart burn issues and the hunger would come on the sleeve where the bypass had no problems. I'm not so sure. Any of you still having issues with heart burn as well as hunger.
Heatherr 149 Posted December 10, 2012 I'm only 1 1/2 years post op. I do sometimes feel hungry, but it's more of an empty pit feeling. I certainly never feel like I have to eat. I can eat more now, but it's still small in quantity and I am still losing, albeit slowly. I am 4lbs from goal. I don't feel like I will ever regret not getting GBP. I am still very easily able to control what I eat. I don't get why GBP would be a bigger benefit other than you would get that added malabsorption oomph in the beginning. That can also be bad if you're Vitamin deficient already. Also, my gf who had bypass still eats like crap. All. Day. Long. She'll gain it back. Either way, you have to stay on plan, not the surgery.
