Butterthebean 8,146 Posted June 10, 2013 Hey all. Ran my second half marathon yesterday in Irving, TX. The Wounded Warrior half marathon. It went well, not my best day but not bad. About 15 minutes before the scheduled start we got hit with a severe thunderstorm. They delayed the start an hour while we got almost 2 inches of rain. We finally started under light rains about 8am. The majority of the run took place on the Campion Trail which is a very nice MUP hat goes on for quite a few miles. But parts of it were underwater. Several times we had to wade through shin deep Water for 100-200 feet at a time. There was no running through that, you basically had to walk. I also got hit with severe GI distress about mile 10. Luckily there were porta cans every mile. But it took a toll on me andi still haven't quite recovered. I blame my pre run carb loading. I still haven't gotten it figured out yet. Since the surgery, these carbs really don't agree with me, especially not in large quantities. I'll figure it out eventually I hope. I did eat a few energy squares during the run but because my stomach was feeling so bad I was sick of them by the end of the run. They did have pancakes and orange wedges at the end of the run. Quite an odd combination. The oranges were good but the pancakes were not appealing to me by then. All in all a great run for a great cause. My hat's off to the many soldiers who ran in full combat gear including packs and gas masks. Renea77 84 Posted June 10, 2013 WTG BTB!!! You endured a lot to finish that half!!! Way to be a trooper and get your 2nd half under your belt! Love the race pic and medal. Your shirt is too awesome! The whole carb loading before a race is still hard for me to, it's tough to know how many carbs to eat to not end up with an upset tummy and needing to use the port a John during the race. I know over time as we continue running we will figure out what works for our bodies. Congrats again!!! My 2nd half for this years scheduled for September...training begins in 2 weeks! danyelleb 386 Posted June 17, 2013 Hello and Happy Fathers Day to those of u that r papas! I returned from an action packed 4 day stay at the local reservoir! My son and I participated in the Recon Run- a 5k obstacle course. The events were okay- I expected more challenging obstacles, but we had a blast nevertheless. There were two huge walls- one with a drop, some barbed wire, a mud pit, some mid sized walls to hop over, and a swim. Swimming in tennis shoes is TOUGH! We had lots of fun. We also kayaked and kayaked and kayaked some more. Lol! Best part was watching the sunset while out on the lake in relatively calm waters. I'm loving being fit. Camping is so much more fun! Love it! alliecat1095 128 Posted June 19, 2013 Hope every one is injury free . Every one seems to be doing a great job.. It's getting very hot here in south Tx. At this race they handed out ice cold towels.. It was very helpful as it was getting hotter and humid. I ran my 2nd 10k this past saturday with a time of 1.11.31 a bit of improvement from my very first 10k. I made a huge NO NO I ran with some newtons they had for anyone to test out. NEVER EVER AGAIN.. I will stick to my merrell or new balance.. Crazypants 36 Posted June 29, 2013 Hi all. My half marathon training group started up this morning. Two miles... I walked most as I'm 3 weeks post op and it felt great. This will be my first half as a sleever and I'm wondering if you have to do anything different regarding pre run food... Etc. have you had to change anything/increase anything to stay hydrated or nutrition wise. I was nervous about food so didn't eat anything before. I used to drink a coffee before my runs as it gave me a nice boost but post surgery, coffee doesn't even sound good. I used to do Peanut Butter on toast... I will try that next weekend unless anyone has a suggestion. I just learned about those lovely little Nunn tablets this week and plan to replace my Gatorade with those and save several hundred wasted calories. I have weird hip/pelvis soreness that turns painful as the runs increase so I'm praying as I lose weight, that will decrease. Anyone use C4 or Spark? I came in the other day from a run and my shoes were making squishy sounds on the floor...they were so wet. Looked like I just got out of the shower. I've run 2 half marathons so far, and several others have run full marathons. For me, the key is hydrating up before the run starts....I'm talking over hydrate. I start drinking a 32 oz bottle about an hour before I start running. On runs longer than 5 miles, I either carry a Water bottle or wear my camelbak. I've tried running with and without food. I seem to do just as well without, but I definitely need Water. I usually add propel to my water as it's "almost" zero calorie...alot less than Gatorade for sure. Good luck with your half marathon. And I will increase on hydration before. Your insight is so helpful. I'm just nervous and trying to prepare. The thought of dumping freaks me out. I'm running the San Antonio rock n roll marathon 3 weeks before that one in college station.
