I've noticed since the operation on the 10th May that it doesn't affect how much alcohol I can consume, if anything I seemed to be able to consume more in a session. I'm now making a conscious effort to not let alcohol take place of the food I was once able to eat. Is anyone facing this potential dilemma? I'm not an alcoholic as I only have drinks once a week on the weekends however I do believe I need to manage it.

Just out of curiosity, What kind of alcohol are we talking about here? like are you taking shots or having beer/wine? And if all how do you react to each one? I am 4 months out a have not drank alcohol yet, but probably will soon over the holidays. Getting liquids in is still the hardest thing for me . I actually get more full from a sip of Water than a bite of food.

The only advice I have for you is to find another "healthy addiction" like exercise ( I know , easier said than done ) or maybe some kind of hobby you enjoy. I took a few psychology classes in college and remember learning that " most addicts can not eliminate their addictions, they can only replace them." I have heard a lot

Of wls patients end up drug addicts/ alcoholics, so please be careful and make sure you are watching out for yourself, cause it could easily get out of control. As long as you are not getting black out drunk every week , I think it's fine that you are having a couple drinks once a week. Just don't let it escalate.

One bottle of burbon is approximately 17 shots and equals around 1200 calories. You are doing this in one night each weekend??? I would have to agree with you, this is a problem. But I'm not sure its even categorized as a cross addiction because seriously...to drink an entire bottle of bourbon in an evening....it's kind of a different problem that you need to get a handle on quickly. On the weight loss side, it's empty calories, but on the "drunk" side...a bottle of hard liqour an evening, even if you only do it one evening is bordering if not in the functioning alcoholic category.

I buy a bottle on a Friday and drink close to 1/2 that night then drink the other 1/2 on the Saturday & Sunday. So a 600ml bottle lasts about 3 evenings.

so thats a little over twenty shots and 1400 calories....basically ten drinks one night and five the next two....you dont see there is a problem here thats bigger than the both of us? on the weight loss issue alone you are looking at a couple days of calories, but then take into consideration you are drinking twenty drinks over each weekens....

Ummmm yes I do see a problem hence why I asked for other people's experiences, with regards to the weight loss I've not gained a gram since May 10th 2012, I've dumped 42kg. I also go to the gym 3 days a week.

Wow, I actually don't drink very often but this does seem an excessive amount. Maybe ask yourself why you are actually drinking that much? What are you getting out of it that is so beneficial you would want to put your body through that once a week? Since you like to exercise, could you add more on the weekend to get the endorphins up?

Or have you tried not having it in the house? How about buying a smaller bottle and starting there?

Good luck, There are places you go to talk more with people about this who would be better qualified than here.

Best Wishes

Realizing there is the potential for a problem before it turns into a real problem is a big deal. I agree with the other poster about buying a smaller bottle and saying that is it for the weekend. Then move to not having in the house at all. Maybe talk to someone who is a professional. Not hard core psych sessions. But talking to a person who is unbiased can help you find a better hobby. It is a slippery slope and glad to hear you are paying attention before things got bad.

We are all at risk of transferring addiction. Maybe try excersize or volunteering with a cause you feel strongly about. Something to keep your mind engaged so alcohol doesn't become the main focus.

Good luck and please let us know how things progress. :-)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
