Approved but now NOT SURE

Ok my insurance approved me and it covers all but 150/day copayment but now I am getting nervous about the risks. I am 5'7" and weigh 243, BMI over 40. I just started having high blood pressure (which i think is also from stress ) but other than that I am in good health.

Obesity runs in my family. My maternal grandmother died early partly because of it my uncle was 600+ lbs and had gastric bypass and died two weeks later from a blood clot. My mother had gastric bypass 6 years ago and lost weight and is doing well.

So long story short I wanted to do this surgery now before I get all those medical problems that come along with weight problems but now I'm wondering if I'm being naive and deep down I'm really only doing it because I'm tired of looking fat and feeling down about myself. I have two boys (11&9) and their dad is not involved so they absolutely need me to be here for them.

I am torn!!!!

I forgot to add that my dad is very against it. My mom and husband support me whatever I want to do. Problem is I now don't know what to do.

I'm tired of looking fat and feeling down about myself.

That's the only reason I did the surgery! All of my tests, cholesterol, sugar, blood pressure was all fine. I have never had a single medicine or Dr. tell me I should go on a medicine for and obesity related disease. I was just sick of being 26 and 385 lbs! I tried dieting and it never worked. I did this surgery 100% so I could look in the mirror and be happy, I wanted the attention from the pretty girls, I didn't want to be judged, and I wanted to wear designer clothes again. I did this surgery for every superficial reason in the book and not one health related reason. I worked out everyday before surgery, I would do 5mi on the elliptical and lift weights, but deep down I hated the guy in the mirror. Now I'm 7 weeks post op, never had a complication, feel amazing, and am starting to get the attention from ladies. So i guess what I'm trying to say is there is no wrong reason to get the surgery in my mind. I am the happiest I have been in years, I got a whole new level of confidence, and it is only going to keep getting better. Do the surgery, it's a life changer :D

I was sleeved 10/22, my before and afters on my profile are why I did it, and im only 7 weeks out like I said.

Donny, you look AMAZING! No wonder your getting attention from girls!! You did a total 180, I hope I'm as successful as you. I'm doing the surgery partially for health reasons but mostly superficial...I can't wait to be little again :)

Jessica, read everyone's stories on here...the risks are SO low and the results are wonderful. I'm so excited for my surgery date (19th) that I can barely sleep. I say go for it, avoid the future health problems and look sexy naked! Good luck!!

That's my dilemma. Are the risks worth it? I'm just scared I guess.

I won't try to speak to that because I can't, but that topic has come up many times and i'm sure there are some other people that can talk you through the children part. Just imagine how much more active of a parent you could be and how much longer they will have you in their lives for.

I have 5 kids and I would like to be more active and participate more and no just be a spectator.

I know if I don't have this surgery my current health could worsen. I have a BMI of 43 and I am in active other than work and going to games. Even when I go to my kids games I'm in pain. I have pain in a daily basis! I want to see my future grand kids and not be in good shape when they come.

My aunt died of diabetes related disease. I don't want to die like that. As I get older I'm seeing health issues pop an I'm at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, and I . want to just avoid them. I want to feel better, be active then look better.

Wear Victoria secret clothes. Nice heels. Just look and feel Pretty on the outside too.

Can't wait finally go for a job I really want.

A job is available now that involve being fit and running I'm over qualified skills wise but afraid ill be turned down because of my weight!

I am not living the sport filled life or with the vacations that I want. I'm simply a couch potato at times and I'm tired of that. I want to be a better example for my kids.

You have your on reasons, and for those reason

You can do it!

I too am like donny. I don't really have any weight related illnesses but I'm tired of fighting this battle. I've been fighting it far too long and I haven't been happy with the person in the mirror for a long. Part of it is vanity, but the other part is just wanting to feel good in my skin. I want to be a better parent to our daughter a better lover to my husband. I want another baby. I started out this journey at 332 on august 29 is when I first met my surgeon. I am down to 301 and getting sleeved tomorrow.

I'm so excited for what the future holds but I'm of course scared about the surgery.

But I know we can do this. You can do this!

Congrats and good luck tomorrow! It's fun watching yourself magically disappear in front of the mirror! I just realized at the gym today that I have turned into "that guy", you know, the one that just stares at himself in the big gym mirrors lol

Only you can make the decision and of course there are risks with everything. I think maybe you just are suffering from cold feet.

The only thing I am sorry for is I did not do this years ago. You have the opportunity while you are still young and can really

prevent obesity related illnesses.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
