What if it doesn't work?

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery Jan 15 and after reading a lot of the posts on here it scares me that some people aren't very successful after the surgery....my biggest fear is that I will have the surgery and it won't help me the way that I hope it will...I am a very determined person and I know it's going to be a lot of work but what if I fail?

You have to believe it will work. There are lots of stall along the way, but I have noticed after a week or 2 stall I will drop a clothing size. Follow your doctors eating plan, don't start solids too soon and you will do fine. I am 9 months out, down 111 lbs and still losing. You can do this!

If you are determined to make it work, that is a big first step. Do you have goals in mind, or discussed this with your surgeon? Some docs seem to be fairly pessimistic on their goal setting, siting something like an average of 60% excess weight loss for the sleeve, so that is a good goal, while others are more aggressive and want to see. their patients to attain 100% EWL. You should certainly follow your doctor's program which hopefully involves tracking your intake, exercise and progress (and if it doesn't, do it yourself anyway - how else can one tell what is working and what isn't?) If your doc's plan is serving you well and you are progressing at a satisfactory pace - great! If not, take a look at your tracking data, talk to people here or in any support groups that you have available, see what others are doing who may be making better progress and see what you can incorporate into your own program.

As with most things in life, there are those who aren't very successful in their endeavors, and others who are successful. If you are determined to make the changes in your life to make it work (if you haven't started already...) there is no reason that you can't be successful as well. Down 105lb in a bit over seven months here, and holding since January. Good luck on your journey as well!

Thank You, I am only 1/2 way there. I also went back and forth, but I am hoping to start trying to have a baby next September. For me that was my main reason i decided that i thought it would be better with the sleeve than by pass because of the malabsorbition.

It takes a lot of hard work and determination. If you follow what the doctors say and are determined to get the result you want. You will :) congrats on the surgery date!!!!

"It" will work almost guaranteed. The thing is that you have to work with it. Make a commitment now to follow the plan- Protein, Water, exercise. The surgery was not fun, the first few weeks of recovery were tough for me. I'll be damned if I went through all this and ruin it by eating junk.

This is the only time I have been able to: control portions (really don't have a choice after the sleeve), read every food label for Protein and carb content, track all my food (my fitness pal I <3

The motivation to do this and do it right (protein, Water, exercise) is very strong this time

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
