Sleeved on December 13th and scared~!

Recommended Posts

I had my endoscopy yesterday and all went well except I hated feeling all floopy after it. It just upped my fear for the whole thing. I have 4 little kiddos and am so scared I won't have the energy for them. I am scared about pain. Can anyone shed some light on pain in the first week? Day by day? I know I have read lots on this board but I just found it last week and I can't get enough of it lol! I am ready excited yet scared to death. I think about backing out because I am scared I will fail at this, like I have in so many diets. I am sure I am not along in that. Thanks friends! So nervous. Wish it was just done and over with.

I know the pain issue is different for everyone. For me there was quite literally no pain to speak of. I had my surgery on 11/15 which was a Thursday, home Friday and the last dose of the pain meds I took was Saturday night even though I really didn't need them at that point. I was back up and visiting clients on that Monday and felt perfectly fine. Stomach itself never did hurt, the incisions were just the very tiniest bit sore for a couple days. Honestly the absolute worst thing for me was the itchy incisions around days 5 to 10. And really it was hardly noticeable just that it was the only thing worth mentioning.

That said I do know I have a relatively higher pain tolerance. I think though there are a lot of factors involved from your own tolerances, your personal anatomy and it's effect on the surgery, surgeon's skill etc. I know my surgeon is very highly respected and even at that started doing the sleeve's with the DaVinci surgical robot to raise the standard even higher. I can't say for sure it made a difference but I know it allows more maneuverability and greater precision with slightly less room inside being needed. I can't help but think it played a role.

Bottom line though is I was scared out of my mind and was ready to rip the IV's out and walk before hand. After it was all said and done I felt so good afterwards I wished I hadn't waited so long.

My situation was a bit different than most. I can say you will have a bit of discomfort, probably, it willl hurt, possibly...lol

Make some plans for yor kiddos. If you can at all, schedule them to spend time with family AWAY from home...if you dont have a sitter maybe a temp?

Don't laugh but seriously, alot of people will not post this, and I dont know why, but many people get a housekeeper to come in once or twice while they recover, and it is so very worth it. We were going to, just so hubby wouldnt have to do it all, and I thought it could free me up from soreness to have enough energy to get back to work a little faster. (I did not get to test my theory. I was away from home for awhile directly following surgery. I think it would have helped, however)

I was sleeved on September 25, 2012....No pain at all....never took any pain meds...was up walking 15 minutes after getting back to my room. I did have some gas in my shoulder but walking helped that. I was back to work the following Monday....so six days out of work. I am serious...when I say no pain I mean NONE....My doctor said everyone is different and I think it depends also on your doctor. I was scared to death but oh so happy I did it.....You will do great, have positive attitude.....Best of Luck and let us know how you do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
