Dr. Nick Nicholson's Self-Pay Patients--Some Questions For You

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I plan on having surgery next year with Dr. Nick. I'm self-pay and flying in to Dallas from out of town. Can anyone answer the following questions:

1. Do you get a leak test after surgery? What other post-op tests do you get?

2. Can your attendant stay in your room with you while you are at hospital?

3. How far is the Hyatt Place hotel from Forest Park?

4. What pre-op tests do you do on Monday before surgery?

5. Is there a psych test?

6. Did you have any complications?

7. Did you have a good experience with this surgeon?

Thanks for any info you can throw my way!

Shannon,

These are questions you should ask your doctor and get in writing!

Good luck.

I was self pay and flew in from out of state for surgery at Forest Park Medical Center. I was a patient of Dr. Davidson though. Great facility and nothing but good things about Dr. Nick. I had a leak test the following morning after surgery.

The rooms are private and there is a couch in there. Someone CAN spend the night if you want them to. Be prepared, the nurses do NOT sleep, they had me up walking the hall at midnight or some gawdawful hour.....that first night!! :) Nurses are GREAT!

The hotel you mention, may be the one we stayed at the night before surgery, I'm not sure. If THEY recommended it, it will not be too far away. It is probably on the opposite side of Hwy 75 AKA Central Expressway, you'll go down the access road and under the over-pass then north on the other side of 75. A couple of miles is my guess.

If you're self pay, it's easier than those who have ins. paying. I had to have blood drawn and pre-registered. No big deal at all.

I had none, zero complications...I'd do this again without hesitation. I've enjoyed every day since I started on this journey.

With self pay, at least with Dr. Davidson, no psch eval

Good luck, you'll love your sleeve!!

Back in June 2010 it was $12,500. I THINK it's a little less now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
