Surgery Date 12-27-12

Recommended Posts

My surgery is planned for 12-27-12. I'm scared and excited at the same time. Does anyone have any advice they want to give me? Maybe something you wish someone would have told you before during or after your surgery.

Thought I would go ahead and start off with a before pic. I can't wait to have during and after pics! the 27th can't get here fast enough!

Congrats to you - 12/27 was my surgery date last year! :D One thing that comes to mind is to take your measurements before surgery, I wish I had done that so I would have had another way to track my progress other than just the scale. Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you, I'm getting excited! Having my EGD on the 11th and then starting my 2 weeks pre op diet. Are you a nurse? I'm an ER nurse. I work with other nurses who have had the sleeve and the bypass. About 8 of us all together.

I'm scheduled on 12/27, too! I am also a nurse. When do you plan to go back to work after surgery? I was hoping 10 days would be enough.

I am a nurse but my full time job is a nursing instructor. So my job is a lot less physical these days. I worked ER before teaching.

My date is 12-27 also. Still have the sleep study and pulmonary testing to go. My insurance won't pay for bariatric so I am self pay. Lots of nurses in my support group at Mercy. Good luck to all of us!

I'm in NC. I work for FIRSTHEALTH of the Carolina's, who offer bariatric surgery and also are self insured so it was really easy for me. My out of pocket is only around $2000. The EGD is the only pre op test I've had to do other than the normal EKG, chest X-ray and labs. It's been a very easy process so far. Just started this in Oct so I feel very lucky.

Hi there! I am a nurse as well- I work in the trauma/burn ICU at the hospital I was sleeved at. I'm actually post op day 11. Do you know how long it took for your co-workers to come back to work? I'm supposed to return this week and I'm terrified to stand on my feet 12+ hours and lift/turn patients.

As for advice, I brought my heating pad to the hospital and don't know what I would've done without it! Make sure you get enough fluids in the day before surgery because trying to have an IV inserted when you're dehydrated is horrible, as I'm sure you know :) Other than that, try to find a Protein shake you like before surgery. I'm still having a hard time finding one I like.

Thanks for the advice! I'm trying to retain all I see and hear and I can use it later. Had my EGD this morning and everything is good! So I start my pre op diet in 2 days and surgery in the 27th! So ready!

Lifting pts so soon? I'd be a bit scared too! The dr released you for that activity already??

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
