Why Proteins Are So Necessary After Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

What if every attempt to drink Protein drinks..you get sick from.......i have been going thru stuff with protein' date=' i am 3 weeks out and on soft foods.......what if your body is rejecting the Protein drinks.[/quote']

I have found that the New whey shots are great and they stay down they give you 42 grams of protein per bottle. I drink half a bottle of Water then pour the whey protein in so it is not as sweet. It ends up like flavored water. There are many brands out there so far i have tried New Whey and to go protein which has 28 grams of protein and not as sweet. I got these a cvs and walgreens. I truly hope this helps.

Protein is a MUST to maintain good muscle health! Because we are over weight and fat, we have extra stored , but you body doesn't store Protein like fat. The MOST IMPORTANT MUSCLE IS HEART ! I'm a cardiac patient, so I KNOW these things! DON'T damage your heart muscle, Best thing is to get your protein from food, not shots or shakes! If it has a MOTHER, it's protein , eat it first, with limited stomach size( intake ) get your protein in first!

With the small size of my sleeved stomach it would be impossible to get all the Protein I need without shakes. Especially at 4 weeks post op.

My nut specifically told me that the protein "shots" are not a good choice early on bc almost all of them are not 100% whey isolate. So even if it days it's 28 grams if protein, it's highly unliky that you're actually getting 28 grams of protein. Could be dangerous if you're relying on them to get protein.

I noticed that when I get in my 60+ grams of Protein I'm not hungry during the day and my cravings disappear. Also I noticed that I don't feel as bloated when I get in my protein. The only downside is it makes me constipated :/

Same here. When I'm getting enough Water and protein, I feel in control of my hunger and I'm making good food choices. I also find that I'm way more tired if I DON'T get enough Water and protein. I just feel blah and washed out.

And ditto on the poop issues! I now take a stool softener every night and I've never had problems in that area!. :o

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
