Was Your Gerd/barrett's Resolved (Cured) Post Op?

Recommended Posts

I have had GERD for many years and take a heavy dose PPI. At one time, it was so bad that I was told I have BARRETT's esophagus (pre-cancerous lesionsfrom heavy acid erosion). Very mild, and they have since resolved with the heavy PPI...i would so love to stop taking my PPI eventually since it's another medication on the cabinet, AND it's pricey! So...did YOU have success with resolving GERD post-op? i see my surgeon in 2 wks so he can tell me more, i'm just looking for experiences from others. thanks!

I had a hiatal hernia which they fixed during surgery and I have not had acid reflux since my surgery. I always needed to sleep with 3 pillows before the surgery and I still had reflux after I fell asleep and would wake up choking. All of that is a thing of the past :). AS far as Barrett's, I was mis-diagnosed a few years back but I think (and I could be wrong here) that once you have Barrett's you will always have it.

Unfortunately my GERD is worse after the surgery. However, I take my PPI daily (Dexilant 60 mg/day) and my symptoms are managed. If I miss a dose though, I know it! Wish I could give you a better report, but there it is.

I was on a PPI for GERD pre-op, and was advised that the sleeve would not be a good choice for me if the upper endoscopy found Barrett's, because the sleeve can exacerbate GERD and put you at higher risk for esophageal cancer down the road. I lost my mom to esophageal cancer a couple of years ago - just two months from diagnosis to her passing. So, you can imagine, I took this pretty seriously. Fortunately, they found no indication of Barrett's, and a substantial hiatal hernia which was considered to be the likely cause of my GERD, so I proceeded with VSG and the hernia was repaired when I had my sleeve surgery. I'm still on a PPI post-op and struggling to wean off of it. I'm able to take Omeprazole which I can get without a prescription at costco very inexpensively. I'd like to get off it eventually because it interferes with Calcium absorption and we have enough trouble with that as sleeve patients.

I, too, had a hiatal hernia repair. I am happy to report that I have not had to take a PPI once since surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
