Losing Weight Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am worried as i have been losing weight lately after my recent diagnosis of diabetes. My dr. has put me on metformin and this past month i have lost 10 lbs. I am not complaining but i'm worried i will lose too much and my BMI won't be high enough to qualify for surgery! If i knew i could lose all the weight myself i wouldn't be worried. Anyone lose a lot of weight on metformin??

I had the same issue. I believe to qualify for surgery, you need to be at least 40 BMI but most insurance will cover between 30-40. I don't have information on Metformin but I was pre-diabetic before I had surgery and over the past 10 weeks, I have lost 40 pounds.

If you go in for a consultation now and weigh-in, I believe your surgeon can use that weight to submit your insurance paperwork.

My BMI right now is 37 my insurance will pay if you have 2 co-morbidities and BMI is between 35-40. I have severe sleep apnea, high cholesterol and diabetes so I'm covered there. I just hope I don't lose to much  Someday I would really like to sleep without my c-pap mask.....forever!

That would be nice if my Dr. can use my consult. weight.
