Drink Only 1Oz. Every 15 Min? Why?

Recommended Posts

My dr. Told me to only drink 1 oz. every fifteen minutes. Why? That takes forever to finish a drink. I can drink faster without pain. O get in most of my fluids of I drink this way. If I drink his way, I'm not even close!

Does anyone else drink faster than that?

I'm a week out, and I'm feeling pretty good. I don't over do the drinking- I CAN'T Guzzle. Small sips.

Thanks for your input.

My doctor says that as long as you can handle it without being ill then you can drink as much as possible. I think the 15oz an hour thing is a minimal to stay hydrated. Ask your doc as every one is different but I was certainly allowed to. Xxx

Sip, sip, sipping is the way to go! If you feel fine no worries. The Dr just does not want anyone to start drinking too fast and causing pain. Sounds like you are doing great.

Water doesn't stretch your sleeve at all. You don't really get a full feeling until you start on thicker things like cream Soups etc, some people don't get it until they start solids. Believe me the full feeling does come. It feels like your tummy can't hold any more so the food sits in your throat instead waiting in queue for a place in your tummy to be freed. Hope this helps a bit. Xx

This was a question I have been wondering about. I was wondering how much and how often I could drink crystal lite or Protein Drinks. My surgery is Wednesday,

Dec 5th. Trying not to worry, just ready for it to be over and start the new me. I will post my progress.

Everyone's tummy is different after surgery. Mine was swollen inside and it was all I could do to finish an ounce every 15 minutes. If you have a hard time getting liquids down, sticking to that regimen gets you to 64 oz. per day if you do it all day.

Thanks probably why your Dr. said to drink that way. Some people luck out and have less swelling at the beginning and can driink/eat more early out.

The initial swelling or lack thereof doesn't mean you won't have good restriction later on.

@ilovemydachshunds, I am at 10 wks post op and I still drink Crystal Light all day. I used to love Water but now its not as good as it used to be. Guess bcuz I can guzzle it down anymore. Not sure. I can drink more than I thought I would be able too, as far as like larger sips, but no big gulping. So you should be able to drink those things as long as you need them. Congrats on your decision to better your life. Even your imagination cant take you to the places your going to go to, emotionally, mentally and physically. Your doing a great thing for yourself! Get ready to wow yourself!!

Thank you so much. I am very nervous about drinking to little so not to make myself sick. Everyone's encouraging words have helped so much.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
